Budget 2021, Shops, restaurants and bars and gyms have been given a financial boost in the Budget…

Budget 2021 News:

Shops, restaurants and bars and gyms in England which have been badly hit by the Covid-19 pandemic have been given a financial boost in the Budget.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced a temporary 50% cut in their business rates, up to a maximum of £110,000.

In addition, he has scrapped 2022’s planned annual increase in rates for all firms for the second year in a row.

The hospitality industry welcomed the move, although it added “the devil will be in the detail”.

Business rates are charged on commercial premises based on the value of the property and the level is set by central government, rather than councils. They are devolved across the UK’s nations.

The Treasury only decides business rates in England, but the UK government also allocates funding to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland through a formula.

This could allow the devolved nations to mirror the changes in England or, alternatively, keep their current business rates and spend the money elsewhere.

Bricks and mortar firms have long complained that they are at an unfair disadvantage compared with online retailers, which do not have to pay business rates. They want to see an online sales tax being applied.

In his Budget speech, Mr Sunak said that in the 2022-23 tax year, pubs, music venues, cinemas, restaurants, hotels, theatres and gyms would be able to claim a discount on their bills of 50%, up to a maximum of £110,000. He said that was a tax cut worth almost £1.7bn.

In conjunction with the existing Small Business Rates Relief, the chancellor said the move meant more than 90% of all retail, hospitality and leisure businesses would see a discount of at least 50%.

Business rates in the retail and leisure sectors have already been reduced during the present financial year following the rates holiday during the pandemic.

Taxes cut on sparkling wine and draught beer

The Treasury has been carrying out a wider review of business rates.

In his Budget speech, Mr Sunak confirmed they would be retained and reformed. “We on this side of the House are clear that reckless, unfunded promises to abolish a tax which raises £25bn every year are completely irresponsible.”

However, he said the system would be made “fairer and timelier with more frequent revaluations every three years”. beginning in 2023.

In addition, from 2023, all firms, not just in retail and hospitality, would be able to make improvements to their property without having to pay extra business rates for 12 months.

The reforms also include a new relief for firms that invest in green technologies, such as solar panels and heat pumps.

‘Incredibly fragile’

UK Hospitality chief executive Kate Nicholls: “We have been lobbying hard for significant reform of the outdated business rates system and therefore very much welcome the chancellor’s move today to extend the 50% business rates relief for the hospitality and leisure sector for the next financial year.

“The devil will be in the detail, though, so we look forward to learning to what extent it will benefit businesses.”

Ms Nicholls also said announcements simplifying, and in some cases cutting, alcohol duties were “great news” for pubs, bars and restaurants and “will benefit all”.

However, she added: “Positive as these announcements are, hospitality remains incredibly fragile, facing myriad critical issues. Rising utility bills, wage bills and food and drink prices have resulted in 13% inflationary costs that businesses are having to absorb at the same time as they navigate severe supply chain issues and chronic staff shortages.

“Given this toxic cocktail, it is imperative the government go further to support businesses in our sector.”

She said the best way to do that would be to keep the current lower rate of 12.5% VAT on hospitality.

“The chancellor has been bold and radical with alcohol duty – we urge him to adopt the same approach when implementing root and branch reform of business rates, to ensure industries share the burden equally.”

Elsewhere, the director general of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), Shevaun Haviland, said the chancellor had listened to the BCC’s “long-standing calls for changes to the business rates system and this will be good news for many firms”.

“It will provide much-needed relief for businesses across the country, giving many firms renewed confidence to invest and grow.”

CBI director general Tony Danker said the chancellor had made “real strides in making the system more palatable for businesses in the shorter term. More frequent valuations, wider reliefs and improving the incentives for firms to decarbonise their premises is what firms have been calling for”.

However, he added that the “hard truth” was that “the government missed the opportunity to truly reform a business rates system that diminishes Britain’s high streets and factories”.

Julian Bird, chief executive of Society of London Theatre and UK Theatre, welcomed the move, saying it would “provide venue operators with the cushion of a lower cost base as they reopen and develop an audience post-pandemic.

“The 100% improvement relief for business rates, providing 12 months relief from higher bills for occupiers where eligible improvements to an existing property increase the rateable value, from 2023 will encourage innovation and enhancement of our theatre buildings,” he added.

Liverpool Smash Man Utd 5-0 away at old Trafford to leave Ollie on the brink…

After heading in at half time 4-0 up and adding a fifth goal early in the second half, Liverpool destroyed Man Utd at Old Trafford to leave Manager, Ollie on the brink of being fired.

The fifth goal by Mo Salah, finishing off his hat-trick, might well have been a final nail in the coffin for Ollie and that is yet to be seen. In scoring today’s hat-trick Mo Salah becomes the highest scoring Premier League African player of all time and today’s hat-trick was his fourth in the Premier Leage.

Liverpool now climb back up to second at the top of the Premier League table, one behind leader Chelsea and are now already 7 points ahead of their bitter rivals with only just 9 matches played.

Ronaldo almost scored a consolation goal to give some level of respect to the game but that was disallowed due to a VAR offside decision.

The game was like a men v boys game and seen a disorganised Man Utd defence in 6’s and 7’s as Liverpool one touched pass there way straight through the heart of the defence on several occasions and it could have been a lot more had Liverpool not shown mercy and took their foot off the gas for most of the second half after the fifth goal had gone in, Ronaldo’ goal was chalked off and Paul Pogba had been sent off after only just coming on for 15 minutes for a terrible two footed talk that saw Naby Keita injured for the match and taken off on a stretcher.

Ronaldo was also lucky to only get a yellow after taking some of his frustration out on young Curtis Jones just before the half time break and many of the Man Utd players ended on yellow cards after many showed their frustrations with bad or late tackles throughout the game.

In addition to Keita going off, the only other downside in what was a history victor for Liverpool, was the early retirement of James Milner when he seemed to tear a ligament after a slip or over exertion early in the first half.

Top 10 Dating App Tips from a marketing professional & relationship expert!

Having been single during most of the pandemic, I have used a number of dating apps, and as a marketing professional and relationship expert, I’m surprised at how wrong some people get their dating app profiles, so I just thought I’d share my top 10 tips to help people get more out of these apps these the might be doing so already!

1. Make sure you have a Number of Good Profile Pictures and that they are All of You!

The number of times you see pictures of multiple people (which one are you?), pets (am I dating a dog), positive quotes (who are you), cropped pictures (what do you look like) and kids (so you have children), is ridiculous?

2. Don’t have a Picture with your Shirt Off (or over doing it on the show of Flesh)!

This is cheesy and don’t look good to most women! (And is going to get you the wrong sort of attention if you’re a woman – unless you want that sort of attention)!

3. Fill Your Profile In Fully (and make it interesting)!

Use the opportunity to showcase your best points, hobbies and interests etc. So you can find someone who has things in common with you rather than be contacted by any random person or no one as there’s no details or info to make a judgement on!

4. Read the Profiles to the end, before getting in touch!

Get an understanding of the person tour contacting before contacting them and then select some info from the profile to use as an ice breaker when you make your introduction.

5. Don’t send DP’s (D*ck Pics)!

Most women don’t want them and if they do, they prefer them down the line when they get to know you, and want to get intimate with you!

6. Don’t Match with People and then Ghost them!

Communication is key so if you match with someone then reply to them and don’t just ignore them for days even if you are busy and not on the app regular.

7. Be Exiting and Enthusiastic in your Communication and Make An Effort!

Don’t just respond to questions with one word answers and make an effort to be enthusiastic in your conversation and make yourself interesting rather than someone who is uninspired and uninterested in life with nothing going on.

8. Try not to use Images that have other People Scribbled Out In.

This just doesn’t look good and show lack of effort. Surely you have pictures of you alone or can take some selfies etc. Come on Make an Effort!

9. Remember that Dating is a Contact Sport!

Most people are looking for a date and not a pen pal so after a bit if chat move the process on to an actual date or video chat to see whether you get on and their is potential to move things along!

10. Don’t use Images from Years Ago!

If you’re using an image from 10 years ago and you can see clearly that it’s not an up to date picture then you are admitting that you aren’t confident in how you look now and can prevent some matches. You can also end up on a date with someone who’s expecting something different than what turns up and can end up wasting a lot of time with this approach.

British Young Tennis Star, Emma Raducanu reaches US Open Final in New York

Emma Raducanu reaches US Open final in New York

British teenager Emma Raducanu reached the US Open final as her meteoric rise continued with a stunning straight-set win over Greek 17th seed Maria Sakkari in New York.

Raducanu, 18, extended her dream run with a 6-1 6-4 victory in which her dominance again almost defied belief.

She is the first qualifier to reach a Grand Slam final and will play another teenager Leylah Fernandez on Saturday.

Raducanu is the first British woman in a major singles final in 44 years.

Watched on by Virginia Wade – the last woman to achieve that feat at Wimbledon in 1977 – Raducanu produced another fearless and ruthless victory that stunned those watching on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

After confidently swatting away a volley on her first match point, Raducanu immediately dropped her racquet on the court and covered her mouth with both hands.

Quickly she broke out into a beaming smile before lapping up the acclaim of a rapturous crowd on the world’s biggest tennis court.

“The time in New York has gone so quickly, I’ve been taking care of each day and three weeks later I’m in the final. I actually can’t believe it,” Raducanu said.

Reaction to brilliant Raducanu reaching the US Open final

‘Crazy, cool & mind-blowing’ to reach final – Raducanu

Raducanu set to be best paid British sportswoman

After coming through three qualifying matches to reach the main draw, she has not dropped a set in any of her nine matches at Flushing Meadows.

It is only Raducanu’s second Grand Slam tournament and the fourth tour-level event of her career.

Additionally, Raducanu is:

the youngest British Grand Slam finalist in 62 years, since Christine Truman reached the French Open final aged 18 in 1959

the first British woman to reach a US Open final in 53 years, following Wade in 1968

only the fourth British woman to reach a Grand Slam final in the Open era

Before her run to the Wimbledon last 16 earlier this summer, Raducanu was ranked 336th in the world.

This win puts her on the verge of the top 30 after already being assured of becoming the British women’s number one by reaching the last four at Flushing Meadows.

Most pertinently, it gives the London teenager – who also passed her A Levels this summer – the opportunity to win one of tennis’ most prestigious titles when she faces Canadian 19-year-old world number 73 Fernandez at 21:00 BST on Saturday.

Given the one-sided nature of the victory against Sakkari – and those before it – Raducanu will not be fazed by the occasion.

Fast start pays dividends for Raducanu

Reaching the last 16 at Wimbledon on her Grand Slam debut catapulted Raducanu into stardom, yet somehow she has managed to surpass what she achieved there with the extraordinary exploits in New York.

Yet again she dismantled a much more experienced opponent with such ease that it breathtakingly belied her age and experience.

Former British number one Greg Rusedski said her performance against Sakkari was “worthy of a world number one”.

French Open semi-finalist Sakkari, like those opponents before her, was left befuddled by Raducanu’s poise and execution. The Greek, who was also aiming to reach her maiden Grand Slam final, was unable to cope with Raducanu’s intensity and could not find a solution to negate it.

Raducanu faced seven break points in her opening two service games, seeing them all off to hold both and move into a 3-0 lead with a break sandwiched in-between.

Sakkari became frustrated with her inability to take her opportunities, chuntering at her box and complaining to the umpire before running off to swap her skirt at the first changeover.

In contrast to Sakkari’s anxious demeanour, Raducanu seemed completely unflustered by the occasion.

That continued as the Briton, backed by a few fans dressed in Union Jack colours and waving flags, won all the decisive points on the way to clinching the opening set in 36 minutes.

Nerveless finish as Henman provides inspiration

Being the frontrunner is a position Raducanu has become accustomed to at Flushing Meadows and once she broke for a 2-1 lead in the second set, there looked to be little way back for Sakkari.

Pressure continued to be applied in each of the Greek’s next two service games – but she managed to hold and maintain hope by remaining a single break down.

With the Greek player’s family looking increasingly tense as they watched on, Sakkari saved five break points in a momentous hold lasting almost 10 minutes for 4-3.

After exchanging holds, Raducanu then had the opportunity to serve for the match.

A wayward forehand put Sakkari 15-0 ahead, before Raducanu found a first serve that could not be returned and led to a loud roar of ‘Come on!’, which signalled the Briton’s relief.

A nerveless forehand down the line was timed to perfection for 30-15 and another penetrating baseline return set up a match point.

With a place in the US Open final beckoning, there were no signs of nerves as she sealed victory with a forehand volley.

Afterwards Raducanu said she had looked to former British number one Tim Henman, standing at the side of the court in his role as a television analyst, for reassuring support before serving on match point.

“Tim is honestly such a big inspiration, he was telling me to treat it one point at a time,” she said.

“In moments like this you definitely can’t get ahead of yourself and you need stay present.

“I’m grateful to Tim for everything he has done for British tennis and for me.”

New York’s teenage kicks signals a changing of the guard

Earlier in Thursday’s night session, Canadian teenager Fernandez sealed her place in the final by shocking Belarusian second seed Aryna Sabalenka.

Unseeded Fernandez, who turned 19 on Monday, won 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-4 to edge a tense semi-final.

Raducanu’s victory then set up the eighth Grand Slam final in the Open Era between teenagers.

It is the first since the 1999 US Open when American hope Serena Williams beat Switzerland’s Martina Hingis.

The success of Raducanu and Fernandez caps a tournament where a host of young stars have filled the void of several big names – in particular Williams, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal – with superb performances.

Martina Navratilova, the 18-time Grand Slam singles champion, said Raducanu and Fernandez’s success was a “changing of the guard” moment.

What Raducanu has achieved ‘does not seem real’ – reaction

Naomi Broady, British player on BBC Radio 5 Live : “I am just speechless, I am so so happy for her. It wasn’t Maria Sakkari’s night but it was the sheer pressure put on her by Emma Raducanu right from the start.

“She had those seven break points, Maria Sakkari, and she couldn’t take one. From that moment Raducanu ran away with the match.

“How exciting is this? We’re allowed to be excited about this, we’re not being British and ahead of ourselves – this is amazing!”

Russell Fuller, BBC tennis correspondent in New York: “ Emma Raducanu is making reaching a Grand Slam final look incredibly easy.

“You think about the players who since Virginia Wade in 1977 have been trying to reach a Grand Slam final for Britain in the women’s game – Johanna Konta came very close at the French Open in 2019 and Jo Durie too, a semi-finalist at the US Open among other appearances at that stage of a Grand Slam.

“Yet Emma Raducanu has done it at the second attempt at her Grand Slam and has taken all of our breath away with the way she has played throughout this summer. It doesn’t seem real.”
