Formula 1 Presents Iridescent 2022 Livery That ‘Animates’ Cars During Races

[Click here to view the video in this article]

Switching its course, Formula 1 has unveiled what it deems to be the most futuristic racing car of all time. Its livery for 2022 seems to have a life of its own, with an iridescent finish that flashes wildly during races.

The car’s animated reaction to light showcases “the different intensities of racing” while reflecting “the elegance and speed of the sport,” advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy London told DesignTAXI.

Beneath the psychedelic sheen is a recreation of F1’s checkered flag, capturing “both the champagne-spraying elegance and the breakneck speed of the sport,” described Wieden+Kennedy London’s senior designer Jonny Isaacson and lead designer Alexandra Thursby-Pelham in the press release. While the color-changing livery portrays a high-speed race into the future, it also represents F1’s journey through the ages.

The car’s body itself takes on a new form, most notably with a reshaped, more “neutral” front wing that’s less aerodynamically sensitive when drivers get near one another. 2022’s car also sports 18-inch wheels, as opposed to 2021’s 13-inch ones, for a more aggressive and prominent feel.

The hype film, produced by Wieden+Kennedy London and Paris design agency Golgotha, takes audiences on a chaotic sensory trip in line with the visceral, revolutionary design system.

Tesla Wants Drivers To Pay $199/Month To Unlock Full Self-Driving

Image via betto rodrigues / Shutterstock.com

Instead of shelling out US$10,000 upfront for full self-driving capabilities, Tesla owners can now opt for a monthly subscription of US$199 instead.

The electric car maker recently introduced this subscription model to make its self-driving software more accessible to owners who can’t afford to pay for it at once. The subscription isn’t a long-term commitment either, as customers will be allowed to opt out at any time.

Despite calling it a full self-driving, the software doesn’t render the vehicle fully autonomous. “The currently enabled features require a fully attentive driver, who has their hands on the wheel and is prepared to take over at any moment,” Tesla said on its website.

The company rolled out a new beta of the software earlier this month, but it’s still prone to making mistakes. Tesla CEO Elon Musk had even asked customers to “please be paranoid” when making use of the feature.

There have been accidents involving the automaker’s self-driving feature, with a family of a 15-year-boy bringing a lawsuit against the firm after their son was killed in a crash with a Tesla on Autopilot. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has also announced an investigation into the software’s possible involvement in 30 different crashes.

For more information on Tesla’s full self-driving software and the subscription plan, head over here.

Ford Debuts Luxury Gasoline Perfume For EV Drivers Who Miss The Scent

Image via Ford

Flashy car concepts revealed by automakers say it all: EVs are the future. However, just as dialup tones died with the advent of Wi-Fi, the scent of gasoline will become a thing of the past when drivers go electric.

The difference is people are going to miss that fossil fuel fragrance, according to a survey commissioned by Ford. The company, which is transitioning to an all-electric lineup, claims that “one in five drivers said the smell of petrol is what they’d miss most when swapping to an electric vehicle,” and that 70% of drivers said they’d miss the familiar scent to a certain degree. On top of that, it learned that the gasoline smell is just as loved as the aroma of new books, and that it’s even more popular than those of wine and cheese.

So to help drivers let go of the past while embracing the nostalgia, Ford teamed up with fragrance house Olfiction to create the ‘Mach-Eau’ (pronounced “macho”) perfume, named after the electric Mustang Mach-E, to retain the feel of whiffing gasoline.

In a bottle modeled after the familiar gas pump, Mach-Eau evokes hints of gasoline but doesn’t completely smell like motor fuels. The fragrance label’s founder Pia Long, an Associate Perfumer in the British Society of Perfumers, examined chemicals found in car interiors, engines, and gas, and incorporated two of them into the concoction. They were benzaldehyde, an almond-like scent emitted in car interiors, and para-cresol, the source of the rubbery scent in car tires.

The chemicals were blended with perfumy ingredients to create an actually pleasant fragrance—because, news flash, most people don’t want to smell like they’ve been drenched in car fuels. These include blue ginger, lavender, geranium and sandalwood for “metallic, smoky and further rubbery accents.” For a recognizable Ford note, an “‘animal’ element” was added to give “an impression of horses to underline the Mustang heritage.”

Mach-Eau isn’t for sale, though. It was presented at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed in an olfactory bid to encourage drivers to move on to EVs, as well as help shake off reservations they may have about transitioning from traditional models.

Tesla Cybertruck Is Now Safer From COVID As There Are No More Door Handles

Image via Mike Mareen / Shutterstock.com

Look, ma, no hands!

While Tesla CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that the finalized Cybertruck will be almost identical to the original design, the company did end up taking a few liberties adding to its futuristic appeal. In a new update, Musk divulged that the unusual pickup truck won’t have any door handles.

Whether intentional or otherwise, not having a handle to grip onto works out in an era where touch is met with caution. But this begs the question: how are drivers going to get into the vehicle?

As you might have guessed, Tesla is getting rid of the need for door handles by having the Cybertruck detect your presence. Upon recognition, the doors will automatically open without touch. Think Face ID—where the iPhone home button was removed—but for Tesla trucks.

Musk didn’t share what kind of sensors will be used to activate the doors, though.

Aside from contactless design as a new feature, Musk recently disclosed that the Cybertruck will enjoy four-wheel steering, allowing it to walk like a crab. Fans can expect for the Cybertruck to go into production by the end of this year.

In end, we kept production design almost exactly same as show car. Just some small tweaks here & there to make it slightly better.

No door handles. Car recognizes you & opens door.

Having all four wheels steer is amazing for nimble handling & tight turns!

Tesla Rival With Solar-Powered Cars Could Give It A Run For Its Money

Image via Sono Motors

Unlike other electric vehicles currently available, including market leader Tesla, Sono Motors is a German automaker that’s actually including solar panels on its cars.

Its upcoming EV, the Sion, has already accumulated more than 13,000 preorders, generating US$331 million in sales.

According to Tom’s Guide, despite the Sion still being in the prototype stage, the car is so promising it has garnered an impressive number of preorders. MarketWatch also speculates that an IPO could be coming soon for the company.

Currently, the Sion is scheduled to go on sale in 2023. However, it will only available in Europe, with no plans announced for a US release just yet. Sono Motors had previously tweeted about releasing the car in Canada, which would make it possible that it could also enter the US marketplace.

Distinguishing it from Tesla or other EVs are the Sion’s sunny energy source. These solar panels are said to add 69 miles after a week of charging in the sun, which could help owners go the distance and save some minutes plugged into the charger. As of now, the only EV sporting solar panels is the Hyundai Ioniq 5, though it’s only placed over its roof.

To reserve the Sion, customers have to put forward a US$3,000 deposit. For more information, head over to the official site here.

Tesla Announces ‘Budget,’ More Lightweight Electric Hatchback Debuting In 2023

Image via tarheel1776 / Shutterstock.com

Tesla recently revealed that it was working on an electric hatchback that could debut in 2023. As reported by Autocar, the new vehicle will be smaller and cheaper than the automaker’s existing models, but will consist of the same futuristic features Tesla is known for.

At Tesla’s Battery Day Event, founder Elon Musk said that the new car will retail for less than US$25,000. This is a huge price drop for Tesla, as its previous models cost at least US$10,000 more, and could even place the vehicle among the cheapest EVs in the US.

The new hatchback will be paired with Tesla’s new battery design. The new battery uses a tabless design, making it 35% smaller than typical electric vehicle batteries, and is touted to be safer and more powerful, too.

Tesla said the new battery will offer five times more energy and six times more power than its predecessor, totaling in 16% more range per kilowatt-hour of charge.

According to Tom’s Guide, as for the car’s design, the new vehicle is expected to be lighter, in part due to the smaller battery. It is touted to weigh 10% less than most electric vehicles, which will in turn help boost the car’s range by an additional 14%.

While Musk said Tesla’s new release will be fully autonomous, it’s still unclear if it means the car won’t require a human driver or if it will use Tesla’s Autopilot software, which does require a human driver in the seat throughout the ride.

A new Tesla hatchback that boasts more power and range at a steep discount? This new vehicle might just be a bestseller in the automaker’s lineup.

Rolls-Royce’s Tiniest Car Ever, Designed To Cheer Up Little Drivers In Hospital

[Click here to view the video in this article]

The youngest Rolls-Royce drivers don’t even have a license. They’re surgery patients of St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester, England, and the special car helps to relieve what would otherwise be an intimidating experience for them.

The bespoke electric Rolls-Royce SRH, hand-built for little ones, was first put to work in 2017. Since then, it has shuttled about 2,000 young heroes in the pediatric day surgery unit, who are empowered to drive themselves to the operation theater instead of walking there or being wheeled in by grownups.

The Rolls-Royce SRH features a unique fiberglass body shell, reinforced with carbon fiber, along with smaller bonnet strips cut out from “real ones” to scale and medical-grade vinyl padding. According to the marque, its two-tone finish was applied “exactly” as designers would have done for a full-size Rolls-Royce. The car took a small team 400 hours to build, and was completed over their own time.

Built for hallways instead of roads, the mini electric model runs at just four miles per hour instead of the typical 155.

Medical personnel can easily sanitize the car with a custom aluminum footwell that extends for cleaning.

Having accomplished its first 100,00 miles of service, the car was recently recalled to the company for maintenance, Rolls-Royce told DesignTAXI in an email. The objective was to restore the model for it to serve a fresh cohort of drivers in the same condition as it had first arrived in.

The servicing process would require love and attention from specialists of Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke Team “and other technical and craft departments,” the marque told DesignTAXI.

“The servicing of our mini Rolls-Royce is perfect timing as we transition out of COVID restrictions and begin to restore our pediatric surgical services,” shared Linda Collins, Day Surgery Unit Sister of St Richard’s Hospital. “Once again, our youngest patients can experience the full use of the car as part of their journey to surgery.”

The car has since returned to the hospital to cheer young patients up and hit the brakes on their surgery-related anxieties.

Rolls-Royce Is Developing Its First EV For Luxury That Won’t Cost The Planet

[Click here to view the video in this article]

Image via betto rodrigues / Shutterstock.com

Tailing behind the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail, which has been dubbed as the “most expensive” new car ever, the luxury automaker has confirmed that its first-ever electric car is in the works.

Bloomberg Television learned from Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös that the EV will be named the ‘Silent Shadow’, after the sedan that was in production between 1965 and 1980. In spite of this homage, the new Silent Shadow will be a wholly new vehicle.

Müller-Ötvös described that the foray into EVs would be in line with Rolls-Royce’s post-opulence brand. “We are not known for roar-y, loud engines and exhaust noises whatsoever, and that’s a big benefit,” he said.

For now, that’s all the company is willing to let on about its plans in the EV market, and there are currently no design nor release details about this new car.

However, fans might uncover a few hints in the ‘Phantom Experimental Electric’ concept that the marque teased in 2011, which you can take a peek at in the video below.

Audi Shows Off Posh Charging Lounges Where You & Your Car Can Rest At

Image via Audi

As Tesla considers building restaurants, Audi has plans of its own to set up swanky charging stations reminiscent of airport lounges for first-class fliers.

Unveiling illustrations of a futuristic Audi charging hub, the automaker envisions a building with six LED-lit fast charging pods. Outside, drivers can plug in their EVs and charge the vehicles for about the same amount of time it takes to pop in for a quick bite and coffee.

Audi purports that the stations can juice up an E-Tron GT from 5% to 80% battery in 23 minutes. The power comes from a set of recycled lithium-ion battery “cubes” which can be charged overnight, mixed in with solar power collected from eco panels on the roof.

As your car takes a quick break, you too can recharge your batteries at the luxurious lounge in the upstairs of the building, where “a range of snacks, drinks, and non-food items” will be provided.

Whereas the charging hub can only accommodate six cars at any one time, its minimal design means that the entire setup is portable and can be moved elsewhere when needed.

To guarantee a spot in the charging hub, customers can reserve one in advance. Non-Audi drivers are also free to charge their EVs at a station if there are no reservations, though they will only be able to access limited areas of the lounge.

Audi hopes to open a pilot station in Germany “in late summer.” There are no plans for rollouts in other parts of the world as of yet.

Rolls-Royce’s Swish ‘Boat Tail’ Car Takes Sea Legs To Land

Land ho! The latest bespoke Rolls-Royce car embodies nautical themes, even down to the way it is constructed.

The swanky Rolls-Royce Boat Tail—commissioned by an unnamed husband and wife—captains the luxury automaker’s foray in coachbuilding as a permanent service. Starting now, clients can have cars intensively customized to their heart’s desires. During this process, full-scale clay models are prepared, allowing Rolls-Royce designers to sculpt the car’s design by hand and honor a story unique to the buyer.

For the Boat Tail, its new owners’ awe for contemporary nautical design is apparent. The wooden “aft deck” with a Caleidolegno veneer at its rear is an ode to the wooden rear decks of old boat tails. It also sports a wrap-around windshield, a nod at the visor on motor launches; and a leaning A-pillar.

Its exterior is splashed in a deep blue that, while subtle in the shadows, glisten under sunlight with its metallic and crystal flakes. Its inside matches this with blue leather, stitching, and piping, along with 55-degree-angle elements that “emulate the spill of a water’s wake.”

Rolls-Royce likens the building process to “yacht building,” relying on age-old handcrafting skills to shape the car’s aluminum body into a silhouette “unable to be achieved by machine alone.” The car’s construction also replicates early boat tail design, which saw the hull being attached to the rolling chassis of a car.

Most prominently, the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail comes with a button that, when activated, springs up “butterfly’s wings” with panels revealing the hosting suite. A treasure chest storing food, champagne, and silver cutlery turns lounging into an al fresco dining experience. Not to mention, a parasol extends to protect guests from sun and rain.

While there’s no mention of the price for this bespoke car, Robb Report suggests that—given the US$13 million price tag of its predecessor, the Rolls-Royce Sweptail—there’s a chance the Boat Tail could be the priciest new car ever.
