Mercedes-Benz Designs Ultramodern Car That Can Only Exist In Virtual Reality

Some ideas stay better as ideas, and that’s precisely Mercedes-Benz’s approach to creating its latest car
 
Well, calling it a creation may be a stretch as it is just a conceptualization that the company intends to keep only in the digital world. 
 
The futuristic model—which doesn’t even have a name, that’s how exploratory it is—was designed with Riot Games and showcased at the League of Legends World Championship. And as the automaker never intended to bring it to life, it had free reign over what it would look like. 

 
The result is a surrealistic hypercar with what looks like a translucent blue body so that you can see the vehicle’s inner workings. Perhaps its most eye-catching feature is its wheels, which seem to be a part of its body.

According to Mercedes-Benz’s chief design officer, Gorden Wagener, conceiving an automobile in virtual reality opens up a world of possibilities. Basically, anything was a go with the team behind the vehicle. “When designing an extraordinary and virtual show car, two worlds merge—real automotive design and animated design,” he says as the concept displays the limitless creativity that can take place in virtual reality.

The only way to experience the model right now is by watching Lil Nas X’s music video for Star Walkin’, produced for the League of Legends World Championship. It is also expected that an infotainment experience based on the game will reach the Mercedes-Benz EQS sedan and SUV in early November.

Citroën Introduces Fresh Brand Identity That Harks Back To 100-Year-Old Logo

To speed into the future, Citroën went back to its roots to remember where it all started. The result is a new logo that’s a near-carbon copy of the very first branding the company adopted when it launched in 1919.

The French automaker has made 10 major overhauls to its brand identity in its 103 years. Although distinct from one another, each version brings Citroën’s first-of-a-kind ‘herringbone’ gear systems to center stage with iconic double chevrons (officially known as “deux chevrons”).

As you can see, the latest iteration goes full circle, reviving the vertical oval frame of the original. To accommodate modern displays, however, the chevrons are now more pronounced, with the loop softened. Citroën has additionally polished its typography to match the lightweight wordmark.

The “new but familiar” look denotes the soul-searching Citroën undertook to get in touch with, and renew, its earlier objectives. “As we look to clarify our future focus, it was logical for us to close the loop by coming back graphically to André Citroën’s first logo which represented the genuine promise of affordable and innovative mobility for all,” explains the company’s Global Brand Designer Alexandre Revert in a press release.

Notably, the old-but-new emblem also borrows from non-automotive industries that have friendlier images. Elements from beauty and apparel branding, among others, lend warmth and intimacy for an aesthetic that’s “easy on the eyes when experienced in different settings.”

The new color palette retains the classic white and cold gray to serve as “a basis of serenity and easiness” but introduces two additional hues. There’s ‘Monte Carlo Blue’, a legacy tone seen on signature cars like the 2CV and DS; and an energetic ‘Infra-Red’ to bring dynamic contrast in print, physical, and digital applications.

“Our new identity is an elegant symbol of progress as we move our customers physically in daring, forward-looking vehicles that challenge traditional industry rules, and emotionally by ensuring their entire experience—particularly going electric—is more affordable, comfortable and enjoyable whatever their wants and needs,” describes CEO Vincent Cobée.

The revamped Citroën logo will make its first appearance on a concept family vehicle set to debut in end-September, and official cars with the new symbol will begin rolling out from mid-2023. Accompanying the makeover is the new tagline, “Nothing Moves Us Like Citroën.”

MSCHF Issues 1,000 Keys That All Unlock The Same Mysterious Car In NYC

MSCHF is selling a thousand keys, and all of them unlock the same car. So what may be the closest we get to a treasure hunt has people scouring the city of New York looking for this elusive vehicle. 
 

The art collective, known for its tongue-in-cheek projects such as the notorious ‘Satan’ Nikes, is turning a single car into a quasi-form of public transport. By selling the keys, it essentially makes all 1,000 holders of it owners of the same vehicle. The aptly-named project, ‘Key4All’, is being sold at US$19 a piece, and a full rundown of the rules can be found here
 
But first, you’ll need to find the right lock. To do so, the art collective is sending people out into the streets of New York to hunt the car down. 
 
Participants will be given a fob that will light up green when it is near the vehicle. Other clues can be solicited from the company by calling a hotline (+1 337-539-4255).

MSCHF has yet to announce the car’s model as it is waiting for all the keys to be sold off first. However, in a statement to Highsnobiety, it did mention that the automotive is a classic and is equipped with a turbo engine. 
 
The whole setup is reminiscent of the lawless workings of Grand Theft Auto, where players can slip in and out of any set of wheels they find on the street. The same applies here. There is no ultimate winner to the vehicle, as anyone with the key can snatch it away. This more ethical form of carjacking, in turn, makes the automobile a shared resource among those who have purchased the key.
 
The art group did note that whoever finds it is in charge of its upkeep and gas. Participants are also not allowed to deface, sell, or destroy the automobile, since MSCHF ultimately owns the vehicle. 
 
It is also mentioned that there is no end to this venture. The car will be in use forever, or until it gets impounded, according to the art pranksters.

Volvo Teases First-Of-Kind Interior System Ensuring No One Is Forgotten In Cars

Volvo, the automaker behind many key automotive safety features, including the three-point seatbelt which it first introduced in 1959, has yet again made progress when it comes to keeping our vehicles safer. 

Now, with the world’s first car interior radar system, the brand will allow drivers to monitor both the cabin and trunk of a vehicle to ensure no child or pet has been left behind. The technology will debut in Volvo’s upcoming EX90 electric SUV.

Sensitive enough to detect even the tiniest movements—such as the breathing of a sleeping toddler—the system hopes to provide a solution for preventable accidents.

In fact, according to the brand, the US government reported that since 1998, over 900 children in the country have died after being forgotten in hot cars. Using this new technology, Volvo wants to ensure such mistakes never happen again. 

To cover as much of the cabin as possible, and not to miss out any spots where a small child or pet may be hiding, the automaker chose to space out the radars throughout the car from front to back, including the rear trunk should someone be trapped inside. 

Drivers will receive notifications when locking the car if the vehicle senses someone has been left inside, with the system giving the entire car a once-over to determine if it’s empty before allowing it to be locked. 

In addition, drivers can choose to keep the car’s climate system on if there are passengers left in the cabin, to help lower the risk of hypothermia in winter or heatstroke in summer months. 

“No one chooses to be distracted or tired, but we know it can happen. We’re all human and distraction is a fact of life,” remarked Lotta Jakobsson, Senior Technical Specialist in Injury Prevention. 

“With the help of cutting-edge technology, we’ll support you when you’re not at your best and help you avoid leaving family members or pets behind by accident.”

Volvo’s New Car Can Sense If You’re Drunk Or Texting—And Refuse To Drive

Roads will not be entirely safe as long as drivers’ eyes are not on them. As such, Volvo wants to take matters into its own hands for its electric cars, as it creates an EV that can sense if one is driving under the influence.
 
The EX90 SUV will not only be able to tell if its owner is drunk—or impaired in any other way—but will also be able to stop the car entirely. 
 
According to Volvo, the company has installed driver understanding into its electric lineup to keep roads safe from reckless driving. This system utilizes light detection and ranging (LIDAR) sensors. One sensor will be placed on the EV’s exterior to look for on-road obstacles. In addition, two more will be positioned within the vehicle to monitor the motorist’s condition.

These sensors will detect the driver’s eye movement to determine if they are fit enough to drive. As per Volvo, it can observe where the person is looking and how long their eyes are closed. Different eye patterns will indicate different levels of awareness of the car. 

 

For example, if a driver is not looking at the road enough, they could be focused on texting instead. And if they are looking at the road a little too much, they could be spaced out.

Should the driver be too drunk, sleepy, distracted, or under the influence of drugs, the car will issue a series of warnings for its owner to stop. If not reciprocated, the vehicle will begin to slow down until it comes to a complete halt. In addition, the EV’s hazard lights will alert others of its stopping. 

 

The EX90 is set to hit roads in November of this year. Only then will we be able to judge appropriately if such road safety methods are helpful.

The automaker is introducing a new program that will verify pre-owned Veyrons or Chirons for buyers looking to purchase a pre-loved supercar, with each vehicle awarded an official certification declaring its status. 

 

Together with the peace of mind that you’ve indeed bought a real Bugatti, the program will offer a limited one-year warranty for these second-hand vehicles.

 

Chiron models will come with the same warranty as those offered on new cars, covering mechanical and electrical repairs, corrosion, or paintwork mishaps. 

 

As for the Veyrons, the warranty will only cover the cost of parts and labor costs for electrical and mechanical fixes; though both warranties will be applicable at its 13 dealerships worldwide. 

 

In addition, those opting for the Certified Pre-Owned program will receive a complimentary annual service that can be used within a year of receiving the car, which is probably a worthy deal considering a basic maintenance reportedly costing “upwards of $50,000 per year.”

Put Googly Eyes On Self-Driving Cars To Bring Down Accidents, Research Suggests

As the world speeds to a future of autonomous vehicles, concerns have been raised about the safety of self-driving cars. Most notably, Tesla’s system capabilities have hit a snag with regulators, who aren’t convinced of the brand’s ‘autopilot’ mode. 

In a new study, researchers from the University of Tokyo have an intriguing proposition to make self-driving vehicles on the roads safer, and it’s pretty outlandish: adding robotic googly eyes. 

 

Simulating the experience via virtual reality, the scientists tasked participants with deciding if to cross the road in front of an oncoming vehicle. Surprisingly, when the car was fitted with robotic eyes—whether trained on the pedestrian or looking away—the subjects made better choices. 

 

“There is not enough investigation into the interaction between self-driving cars and the people around them, such as pedestrians. So, we need more investigation and effort into such interactions to bring safety and assurance to society,” explained Professor Takeo Igarashi. 

 

With autonomous vehicles, those in the front seat turn from fully participating drivers to mere passengers and may not pay as much attention to the road ahead without the need to operate or navigate the car. 

 

As such, it may prove difficult for pedestrians crossing the road to decipher if a driver or car has spotted them, lacking the usual eye contact or hand wave we’ve grown accustomed to with human drivers.

Enter the cartoonish, remote-controlled robotic eyes. With this fixture, dubbed the “gazing car,” both male and female participants made fewer errors when crossing the road, ultimately proving it resulted in safer crossing for everyone. 

 

Though it was noted that the car’s eyes didn’t make much of a difference for men in safe situations (i.e., choosing to cross the road when the car was about to stop), women’s decisions hardly changed in unsafe scenarios.

 

There were mixed reactions to the googly eyes, with some finding them cute and others thinking they were creepy. Male participants reported that they felt a sense of danger when the vehicle’s eyes looked away, and females said feeling safer when directly spotted by the car. 

 

Of course, the study’s findings are limited by the small number of participants enacting just one scenario. Plus, our decisions in real life may not line up with how we respond to a virtual reality simulation. 

 

Despite that, the team feels that if the eye fixtures can indeed reduce traffic accidents and add to the safety of self-driving vehicles, it should become a serious consideration for manufacturers going forward. 

 

“In the future, we would like to develop automatic control of the robotic eyes connected to the self-driving AI, which could accommodate different situations,” said Project Lecturer Chia-Ming Chang.

 

“I hope this research encourages other groups to try similar ideas, anything that facilitates better interaction between self-driving cars and pedestrians, which ultimately saves people’s lives,” he added.

Daniel Arsham Designs Porsche Based On Wabi Sabi, Japanese Love Of Imperfection

Daniel Arsham is turning to the Japanese way of thinking, Wabi Sabi, as inspiration for his custom Porsche 1955 356. The result: a rustic-looking speedster that looks right out of a scene from Blade Runner.

 

Wabi Sabi is a frame of mind that looks at the imperfect nature of our lives and finds a way to thrive in it, appreciating the beauty in flaws.

In that sense, Arsham has created the ‘356 Bonsai’ to look like it is pre-painted, with rusted grills over the lights and an aged patchwork seating for the interior.

 

Matthew Ammirati from Bridgehampton Motoring Club and John Willhoit from Willhoit Auto Restoration helped the artist achieve this raw-looking brushed metal exterior that looks like the car has been through some rough times.

The roof of the convertible is covered in salvaged Japanese denim. Within the car, the upholstery is also mixed with indigo-dyed Sashiko canvas that has been stitched together in a boro patchwork form.

 

The materials chosen were inspired by Japanese designers Motofuki ‘Poggy’ Kogi and Yutaka Fujihara from BerBerJin. The meeting of all these materials adds a softness to the stark metal of the car.

Within the trunk, a tatami mat has been laid down upon which a spare tire rests. And just above an aged license plate that reads ‘BONSAI’ is a jaded emblem of the plant resting on the car’s rear grill.

According to Porsche, it took two years for the designer to bring his vision to life. The Wabi Sabi-inspired car was unveiled at The Bridge event in the Hamptons.

Ferrari Unveils Its Very First Four-Door, Four-Seater Vehicle In 75 Years

As it celebrates its 75th year in the automotive business, Ferrari is going where it has never gone before with a four-door, four-seater car. 

The Purosangue, which translates to “thoroughbred” in Italian, isn’t your usual family drive, with the brand promising it will “change the landscape of performance vehicles across the globe.” 

While popular, the company’s two-seater supercars admittedly aren’t the most suitable for daily life, especially for those ferrying around more than one passenger. Now, drivers won’t have to choose between style and practicality, with the release offering both in a single vehicle.

According to the automaker, the Purosangue was designed to be as aerodynamic as possible, featuring a range of new innovations, including updated vehicle dynamic control systems and the debut of active suspension technology using the brand’s Multimatic True Active Spool Valve (TASV) system. 

One of the car’s standout features is its rear-hinged passenger doors, known as “welcome doors,” which will allow riders to move in and out of the vehicle without the need for more space. 

Plus, the vehicle will sport the largest-ever rear found on a Ferrari, together with luxuries such as heated seats for more comfortable rides, and a high-end Burmester audio system for road trip tunes.

Performance-wise, the car can go from zero to 62 mph in just 3.3 seconds, and up to 125 mph in as little 10.2 seconds. 

Boasting a 6.5 liter, V-12 engine, drivers will enjoy a “seemingly never-ending” amount of power under the accelerator, with eight-speed, dual clutch transmission and 812 Competizione cylinder heads promising that oh-so-attractive roar. 

Despite its focus on speed and luxury, the Purosangue was also designed with sustainability in mind.

In fact, 85% of the car’s launch trim comes from eco-friendly sources, such as its fabric roof lining being made from recycled polyester, and the plush carpet comprising polyamide derived from recycled fishing nets.

‘Pokémon’ x MINI Unravel Concept Car ‘Electrified’ By Pikachu

This MINI concept wants to be the very best that no car ever was, and it’s achieving this by harnessing the electrifying cuteness of Pikachu, plus “gaming features.”

In an unexpected tie-in, the automaker took to Gamescom’s Opening Night Live to preview the all-electric, experimental ‘Aceman’ hatchback with a ‘Pokémon Mode’.

With this setting on, riders will be greeted by an animated OLED dashboard, all visually powered up in neon by Pikachu’s electric shocks.

The conceptual car even has a built-in “mobile cinema” with a projector that can screen Pokémon episodes, presumably when the EV is parked.

There’s also the ability to plug a gaming console into the Aceman. Neither MINI nor Nintendo has elaborated on what this means, but it’s possible that the projector—or even the cockpit—could be used to screen gaming visuals. Though, there’s really no need to overthink this as it’s just a fun concept (evidently, its creators haven’t).

It’s highly unlikely that the Pokémon car will ever make it to market, considering that Tesla has been under great scrutiny for bringing video games to its own vehicles. More than anything, the Pokémon-inspired model is a marketing-charged (pun intended) metaphor of MINI’s plans to go fully electric by 2030.

According to the company, the car is also a reminder to “play on” and “never stop playing.” Again, these are expressions. You should always keep your eyes on the road while driving.

McLaren Turns Video Game Supercar Into Real-Life, On-Track Speedster

McLaren brings video games to life as it turns one of its cars from the Gran Turismo series into a real-life road car that fans can purchase. 

 

The in-game car, the McLaren Ultimate Vision Gran Turismo (VGT), will officially take shape as the Solus GT. The game version first appeared in the franchise five years ago before the carmaker decided to make one hit real asphalt.

 

The supercar is a single-seater with a 5.2-liter V10 engine that is created for on-track driving only. It doesn’t have any traditional doors; instead, its driver will have to slide its windshield and canopy forward and climb into the cockpit.

It also boasts dramatic, aerodynamic underbody diffusers and has a downforce of 2,646 pounds.

The Solus GT has over 830 horsepower and is able to rev up from zero to 60 miles per hour in about 2.5 seconds, with a top speed of 200 mph.

 

Its carbon fiber body and 3D-printed titanium model keep this car at a weight of below 1,000 kg (2,205 lbs).

Only 25 of these video-game-turned-real-life cars are up for grabs, each with a multi-million dollar price tag attached to its shiny hood.

If you manage to get your paws on one of these, McLaren is also giving the Formula 1 experience by throwing in an FIA-approved racing suit, drivers’ coaching, and a custom seat fitting to mold the head and neck support to the buyer. 

 

However, this car cannot be used for any official racing outside of a few driver events McLaren will be holding for people to get together and drive around in.

Dodge Wants To Shake Up Quiet EV Market With Loud Muscle Electric Cars

While one of the highlights of owning an electric vehicle is its nearly-silent engine, not everyone’s keen to say goodbye to the powerful muscle cars of old. 

To serve this subset of petrol heads, Dodge, the automaker famed for its iconic gas-guzzling cars, is planning to keep the same loud engines it’s known for, even when it transitions to more environmentally-friendly EVs.

Bucking the trend of “boring” and “quiet” EVs, the concept car’s propulsion system exceeds even the company’s popular Hellcat engine, incorporated with an industry-first exhaust sound system to give drivers the unmistakable 126 dB roar they crave. 

The car’s façade marries a modern exterior with a functional aerodynamic design, with its exclusive three-pointed Fratzog badge—originally used on its cars from 1962 to 1976—making a comeback on the front grille.

In addition, the vehicle’s interior elements are specially selected to give passengers an immersive experience, including the automaker’s largest-ever 12.3-inch center screen and a 16-inch instrument cluster that’s curved for a driver-focused feel.

A panoramic glass roof gives passengers the feel of an open-air ride, while the race-inspired carbon fiber “tub” floor and hatch provides larger families with more storage space than any other Dodge car on offer. 

“Dodge is about muscle, attitude, and performance, and the brand carries that chip on its shoulder and into the BEV segment through a concept loaded with patents, innovations, and performance features that embody the electrified muscle of tomorrow,” says Tim Kuniskis, Dodge Brand Chief Executive Officer.

Lincoln Removes The Steering Wheel From Cars In Sleek, Futuristic Concept

Lincoln looks to its past as it heads into the future with the unveiling of an all-electric ‘Model L100’ concept.

 

Presented at Monterey Car Week, the experimental design takes inspiration from its 1922 predecessor, the Model L sedan.

 

In the cabin of the car, the steering wheel is conspicuously absent; filling its space on the dashboard, instead, is a jeweled ‘chess piece’ that helps control different aspects of the EV.

You may be wondering, so, how do we drive the car now? Well, the answer is: you won’t. The vehicle is envisioned to be fully self-driving. 

 

The rest of the interior plays into that feature, with spacious front and back seats that look like something out of a bespoke lounge. The seats can also rotate around so that you can enjoy a more social joyride without having to worry about the road ahead.

There is also a digital floor that mimics waves to simulate the feel of driving on water.

 

The concept car also sports a glass roof, and reverse-hinged doors that spread open like wings.

Lincoln imagines the explorative EV with a solid-state battery and powered electric motors at each wheel, which will connect to it.

 

While this may just be a concept, it definitely shows us where the future path for cars might be heading down. As electric vehicles are on the rise, more and more automakers are finding a way to set themselves apart from the rest.

 

If reports are right, there is at least one steering wheel-free car on the way. Apple is purportedly building a self-driving vehicle that doesn’t have one.

Ford Creates AR Headlights That Flash Signs So You’ll Keep Your Eyes On The Road

Ford Motors is shining a light on road safety with augmented-reality headlights that project useful information onto the road ahead.

 

The company is utilizing high-resolution headlight technology to cast symbols indicating speed limits, icy roads, upcoming roundabouts, and even line guides in their direction from the car itself.

 

Ultimately, the goal is to eliminate the need for a user to take their eyes off the road.

The light-up signs will also be able to present the same information to other drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians on the road.

The technology was created to help reduce the fear of driving at night.

 

Ford isn’t the first automaker to come up with such headlights. In fact, luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz has already installed ‘Digital Lights’ in its Maybach cars.

However, if this does make it to market, Ford would be the first company to take these headlights to the masses.

 

The legality for cars to enable AR capabilities is still very much up in the air with government rulings. However, if passed, it could certainly change the very way people drive.

Dodge Presents Loud Electric Muscle Concept Car To Shake Up Quiet EV Market

While one of the highlights of owning an electric vehicle is its nearly-silent engine, not everyone’s keen to say goodbye to the powerful muscle cars of old. 

To serve this subset of petrol heads, Dodge, the automaker famed for its iconic gas-guzzling cars, is planning to keep the same loud engines it’s known for, even when it transitions to more environmentally-friendly EVs.

Soon-To-Be World’s ‘Fastest Car’ To Zip Down Race Tracks Soon

A car that looks like it belongs on the streets of Gotham is set to be the fastest in the world, according to its maker.

 

Automaker Rodin has just unveiled its plans for ‘FZERO’, a hypercar that is set to be unmatched by any other on the time charts. Its name, FZERO, is a play on the fact that David Dicker, the founder of the company, had set out to build a car faster than Formula One automobiles.

The FZERO is said to be unbounded by road regulations or racing regulations, as well. It will be meant solely for use on the track and will not be used as a championship car.

 

The car will be made entirely from carbon fiber and weigh just 1,539 pounds—220 pounds lighter than F1’s current cars for this season.

Under the hood rests a four-liter V10 twin-turbo engine, coming in at just 291 pounds, apparently making it the lightest in the game. The engine is built in-house at Rodin and can go up to 986 brake horsepower and a top speed of upwards of 224 miles per hour. 

 

It will have a closed cockpit, and its aerodynamic front claw-like wings and floor will help it achieve an impressive 9,000 pounds of downforce.

Currently, the only competition for the FZERO is Red Bull racing director Adrian Newey’s RB17. And it hopes to beat it in the cost department as well, as it is currently estimated to cost US$2.18 million while the RB17 will set potential owners back US$6.1 million. 

 

According to the manufacturer, only 27 of these lightning-speed cars will be available for purchase by the summer of 2023.

New Car Coating Works With The Sun To Heal Itself From Scratches

One of the most annoying feelings as a driver is getting out of your car to see a long unsightly scratch lodged into the side, and just knowing you’ll have to take time out to get it fixed at a mechanic. 

 

Well, those days of having to get your vehicle repainted might soon be over, as scientists at a research facility in Korea have discovered a new type of coating that can heal scratches by harnessing power from the sun. The work was published in the ACS Applied Polymer Materials

 

The coating is a network of polymers that are able to break and repair their chemical bonds under near-infrared light. It is mixed with an organic photothermal dye that captures light. The coating is triggered by heat and, due to its colorless nature, can blend in with even the brightest blue or red paint jobs.

This new self-repairing substance was tested on different cars and placed under the sun to see if natural light and heat would work. It did, in fact, work, and it only took 30 minutes for the scratches to disappear. 

 

However, if 30 minutes is too long, scientists have also found that concentrated light—like shining a magnifying glass over the area—will get the job done in almost 30 seconds instead. As an added bonus, the reparative matter can remove scratches from the same spot over and over again.

While self-healing coating already exists and can be added to cars, most will need UV light to work and it will take much longer to repair the damage. Nissan provides its own Scratch Shield, though it would take up to a week for it to work. 

 

The problem with existing curative materials is that they use inorganic bases that require particular conditions to work in. This discovery of using organic dyes instead taps on the sun as one great power source. 

 

Cars are not just where this substance’s abilities stop. In fact, according to the press release, the research team is also finding ways for it to be used on cracked smartphone screens and even on buildings.

Princess Diana’s Ford Escort, Designed For Her Safety, Takes To Auction

The People’s Princess’ car is now truly one for the people.

 

Princess Diana’s iconic black Ford Escort RS, affectionally dubbed the ‘People’s Sports Car’, is going on sale via Silverstone Auctions

 

The family sedan was driven by the princess for three years from 1985 to 1988. Often, she was seen out shopping or shuttling her young sons around in her car, with little Prince William and Prince Harry strapped into the seats in the back. 

 

In order to allow Lady Diana to get around undercover, Ford installed special features on the car. It was fitted with a five-slat front grille, extra rearview mirrors, and a radio in the glovebox were added for the mandatory safety protection officer she had to drive with.

However, this wasn’t her first Escort. In fact, she owned three of them. While Ford usually made the cars in white, specially produced versions in black were created just for her and her security detail. 

 

Eventually, the royal protection service made her switch to different models of vehicles that offered better security and privacy for her to drive around in.

Still, Silverstone Auctions believes that despite her driving more luxurious models, it estimates that the Ford Escort will outsell any of her other cars. The current estimate for the car stands at US$100,000 but is projected to fetch way more than that. 

 

Along with the model, the new owner will receive a Lifetime Tracker, original documents for the car, and a spare key.

The vehicle has since been owned by two other people after the princess, but the auction house insists it is still in mint condition and has racked up only 25,000 miles.

3D-Printed Hypercar Could Change The Game With Its Rather Hands-Off Process

This 3D-printed hypercar has taken a revolutionary turn for manufacturing.

 

The ‘21C’, from Los Angeles-based Czinger Vehicles, is a sports car that doesn’t take the traditional route in production. Instead, it adopts a hybrid method for its creation where the main components of the carbon-fibered car are constructed by artificial intelligence. It is then brought to life with a 3D printer. 

 

Co-founder Lukas Czinger created an assembly system that does not require fixed tools while the vehicle is being built. This essentially means that the robot can move from developing, for example, the engine to the car’s rear without being recast with different appliances to create each part of the body. 

 

A polymer team also worked to develop an adhesive that can stick each separate piece together and have it bond within two seconds. 

 

Under the hood is a twin-turbo V8 engine to power its rear wheels and two electric motors control its front tires.

In terms of specs for the car, it can go from zero to 62 miles per hour in just 1.29 seconds and can reach a top speed of 253 miles per hour. 

 

Just a year ago, at the Circuit of the Americas, it surpassed the McLaren Senna by two seconds. 

 

Though, such innovative production methods and supercar abilities don’t come without a price tag to match. The 21C is currently priced at US$2 million and can go up to US$2.5 million depending on the customer’s preferences.  

 

According to Robb Report, even though the production mechanics are currently exclusive, the company would eventually like to change the landscape of engineering and manufacturing by bringing the technology to the car industry for anyone to use. 

 

Recently, it has partnered with Broadwalk Auto Group to start production of 80 of the 21C cars in Texas by the last quarter of 2023.

Ferrari Recalls Over 23,000 Vehicles Over Brake Failure Concerns

In a rather surprising recall, supercar maker Ferrari has issued a notice for 23,555 vehicles, and considering how exclusive its cars are, that means models from as far back as 2005 are affected. 

It appears the models highlighted in the recall notice may be suffering from a brake-system issue, of which a brake fluid reservoir cap may not vent as intended.

 

As per Car and Driver, this could potentially cause a vacuum to form within the reservoir, which will then lead it to leak and affect the function of the brakes.

According to CNET, fortunately, the error will be resolved rather quickly, with technicians tasked to replace the reservoir cap with a functioning one once the cars are returned to Ferrari’s dealership. 

The automaker says affected owners can schedule a repair with their dealers, and should take caution if in-vehicle warnings sound up while on the road. Head here to see the entire list of affected cars.

Ford Unveils America’s First Electric Pickup Truck Optimized For The Police

Having provided over 12,000 police departments in America with purpose-built vehicles to aid them in protecting and serving communities for over seven decades, Ford has just unveiled the first-ever electric pickup truck specially developed for the police.

The mean-looking 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Pro SSV can not only go from zero to 60 mph in just four seconds, but it also comes designed to handle the unique needs outside of pursuits—including lighting up highways at an accident or crime scene, and allowing officers to tow a boat or trailer.

Additionally, the interior of the truck features police-grade seats with reduced bolsters to help officers enter and exit the vehicle more swiftly, built-in steel intrusion plates in the front setbacks, a reinforced instrument panel toy trap for police equipment, and of course, the roof-mounted LED warning beacons. 

Departments switching to the zero-emissions police truck will still be able to connect to existing fleets of Ford and non-Ford combustion engine vehicles, and can schedule maintenance needs in batches to reduce costs.

Porsche May Bring Its Engines To Formula 1 With Potential Red Bull Merger

This week, the Formula 1 paddocks have been swirling with rumors about the entry of a major automaker to the world’s foremost motorsport competition, as it seems growingly likely that Porsche could acquire half of Red Bull’s operations. 

Based on a document published by Morocco’s Conseil de la Concurrence, as cited by The Race, the alleged merger is expected to extend to most of the team’s activities, and while not officially confirmed, the 10-year partnership appears to have been a long time coming. 

While pundits had expected the deal to be announced during the Austrian Grand Prix, it seems the go-ahead was postponed due to delays in approvals of the new engine regulations that will apply to F1 teams in 2026. 

The site noted that the FIA World Motor Sport Council is slated to cast its vote on the matter soon, and could spur on Porsche’s formal entry to the competition in the near future, though the merger will still have to be approved by international authorities to ensure it complies with anti-competition laws. 

Naturally, it’s expected that Red Bull’s sister out, AlphaTauri, will also adopt Porsche’s powertrain should the deal go through, with the supercar maker planning to use the teams’ recently-established Powertrains facilities to develop the engine. 

Will the entry of more famed automakers help make the sport more competitive? Or will it give the leading teams an even bigger head-start? Fans will no doubt hope it’s the former.

MINI Previews What Its EVs Of The Future Could All Look Like

MINI’s forthcoming cars will reflect “Charismatic Simplicity,” the new design language that the automaker has adopted for its brand. The first to embody this ethos is the ‘MINI Aceman’, a concept electric car encapsulating elements that the company hopes to bring to its lineup.

The experimental crossover model “[bridges] the space between the MINI Cooper and the MINI Countryman,” says the brand. It’s conceptualized with a fun, invisible ‘grille’ that lights up in various patterns, body contoured wheel arches, and large wheels.

Perhaps the most contentious detail is its over-the-top Union Jack roof, a tribute to MINI’s British origins, though it’s possible that it’s just there for gags and laughs.

Stefanie Wurst, Head of the MINI Brand, says the carmaker’s future models will sport “an electrified go-kart feel, an immersive digital experience, and a strong focus on a minimal environmental footprint.”

Inside, the car is decked out in sustainable textiles in velvet velour, waffle weave, and flat-knit variations, replacing the usual leather. Prominent houndstooth patterns and embroidered X and O prints aim to strengthen brand recognition indoors.

The Aceman, which seats five, retains MINI’s circular console. Only this time, the display stretches to cover the entire dashboard, seeping into the door panels.

The concept will set the tone for MINI as its forges its way into an all-electric future by 2030.

Bugatti Unveils Modernized Visual Identity To Speed Beyond Hyper Sports Cars

As the automotive industry swerves down exciting new paths, Bugatti is feeling a little stunted by its reputation as just a hyper sports car maker. In driving its new stance forward, the marque believes it necessary to overhaul its corporate identity.

“As the world changes and industries shift, so does Bugatti,” the company outlines in its announcement. Bugatti says it is rising above its role as a manufacturer that exclusively builds hypercars “to become a wider-reaching luxury brand.”

 

What this implies is that speed will take a back seat, as the company reveals that it will also extend its portfolio “outside the automotive territory” all while “mastering new technologies within automotive.”

For this dramatic transformation, the carmaker turned to longstanding brand consultancy Interbrand to work on the revamp.

 

In spite of Bugatti’s new, forward-looking ethos, the visual identity is still partly clamped to its heritage, emanating the historic impact of Bugatti’s two most iconic cars, the Bugatti Veyron and Bugatti Chiron.

 

The logomark features an all-new Bugatti Blue, a nod at the company’s French roots, along with the initials of founder Ettore Bugatti.

As part of the ground-up overhaul, Interbrand also designed a bespoke typeface alluding to some of Bugatti archival typography.

The overall lightweight look represents an image that’s “bolder, more self-confident, more modern, more progressive and thus fits much better to where Bugatti stands today and the direction Bugatti will develop,” says Bugatti.

 

It’s worth noting that the new branding won’t replace the badges on Bugatti’s cars. It’s an overarching corporate symbol designed to greet customers at dealerships and events, as well as made to appear on Bugatti’s online channels. The French marque has begun rolling out the identity in these places.
