Better Discovery for Replays

There’s nothing like experiencing the moment in real time, but replays have helped creators of all types build a catalog of their best rooms for people to enjoy as if they were live, but later. Now we’re also making it easier to find these replays as a user. Yay!

Replays in Search

Replay rooms now show up as a result when you search! If you heard about a great room that you missed, just search for the title, kick back and listen in.

Replay Carousels

We love the hallway because it’s so much more than a feed — at its best, it really feels like walking through the world and seeing all kinds of people around you having wildly diverse conversations.

Today, a new crowd is arriving at the party: carousels featuring replays from the best rooms in your network!

It’s also really good exercise for your finger to swipe sideways instead of just downwards, scientifically, this is a known fact. Enjoy!

The 7 critical company values that matter for 2021, 2022, 2023 and beyond…

There are 7 critical company values that matter in 2021, 2022 and beyond.

2020 was a year like no other, at least in our lifetimes.

The global economy was brought to its knees as businesses were forced to closed or make lots of changes, supply chains saw major disruptions and stay-at-home orders and lockdowns were issued everywhere.

In times like these, the companies that survive and/or even thrive amongst the chaos, are the companies whose foundations and cultures are positive and strong, with resilience built into their very ethos, structures and cultures!

So let’s take a look into the seven levels of organisational consciousness which can be incorporated into company culture during a pandemic or additional global crisis of that magnitude.

Level One: Survival

This the most basic of company values or level of organisational consciousness. It is at the bottom of the consciousness ladder but that doesn’t mean that this level isn’t necessary; in fact, far from it!

In a pandemic, survival is critical, and companies must implement strategies which help the organisation to be stable financially and create shareholder value despite the ongoing chaos.

Level Two: Relationships

Particularly during a pandemic, companies need to foster a culture in which employees and clients feel loyal to the organisation since it takes care of their needs.

For example, the company can offer paid sick leave/enhanced medical insurance to those taken ill and the firm can also renegotiate payment terms with its customers who are struggling to meet their commitments due to the effects of the pandemic.

A company’s biggest assets are its people (both employees and customers), and aiming to create strong relationships with these people will almost guarantee the survival and success of the company.

Level Three: Self-Esteem

The next value up the ladder is self-esteem. Organisations seeking to navigate the challenges presented by the ongoing pandemic need to establish structures and procedures that bring order to the organisation and make it possible for performance to improve.

For example, a streamlined travel policy that spells out which specific safety measures employees need to take and how they can get help quickly in case of emergency may bump up productivity among employees whose roles require them to travel frequently. Avoid confusion and unnecessary bureaucracy at all costs.

Level Four: Transformation

This core value facilitates improvement and innovation among employees. A company culture which encourages adaptability as well as continuous improvement encourages an environment where employees can participate in decision making. When employees are given a voice, their loyalty and engagement shoot up, and the organisation is the net winner.

Level Five: Internal Cohesion

During a pandemic, companies need to focus on shared values and an inspiring vision which can bring together the motivations of every team member, with those of the organisation. When everyone is pulling in the same direction (as opposed to each team only caring about what happens in their team or department), performance, creativity, integrity and commitment can really increase exponentially, with a compound effective.

This can be the best position to take when facing a pandemic or any major crisis!

Level Six: Making a Difference

This penultimate value entails building mutually beneficial alliances with other entities or groups as well as with the community.

For example, the company culture can enable the creation of opportunities to support local hospitals or soup kitchens using a fraction of the profits earned by the company.

The company can also nurture alliances with other organisations in which each firm is a client of the other’s products or services, and all parties contribute to the community.

As the organisation commits to a bigger purpose, internal cohesion will deepen.

Level Seven: Service

This is the highest value that an organisation can have, especially during a pandemic. At this level, everyone in the organisation recognises that they are part of everything around them. They therefore strive to make a positive contribution towards creating a better planet and humanity in general.

In a pandemic, the importance of this value in a company culture is all too apparent; who will buy your products if everyone is sick or dies and yet you have the capacity to prevent or minimise the impact of the pandemic?

Companies that survive and even thrive, tend to operate at this level of consciousness, and it no longer matters who is at the helm. The system lives and breathes service, so there is no choice but for everyone to go along with it!

As you rebuild your company after the shocks of 2020 and a significant part of 2021, or as you seek a fresh start in a new company, take a close look at how you can apply the seven values above in the culture of your company.

These aspects of a company culture will not only ensure you breeze through the pandemic, but you will be on your way to building a lasting legacy!

Budget 2021, Shops, restaurants and bars and gyms have been given a financial boost in the Budget…

Budget 2021 News:

Shops, restaurants and bars and gyms in England which have been badly hit by the Covid-19 pandemic have been given a financial boost in the Budget.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced a temporary 50% cut in their business rates, up to a maximum of £110,000.

In addition, he has scrapped 2022’s planned annual increase in rates for all firms for the second year in a row.

The hospitality industry welcomed the move, although it added “the devil will be in the detail”.

Business rates are charged on commercial premises based on the value of the property and the level is set by central government, rather than councils. They are devolved across the UK’s nations.

The Treasury only decides business rates in England, but the UK government also allocates funding to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland through a formula.

This could allow the devolved nations to mirror the changes in England or, alternatively, keep their current business rates and spend the money elsewhere.

Bricks and mortar firms have long complained that they are at an unfair disadvantage compared with online retailers, which do not have to pay business rates. They want to see an online sales tax being applied.

In his Budget speech, Mr Sunak said that in the 2022-23 tax year, pubs, music venues, cinemas, restaurants, hotels, theatres and gyms would be able to claim a discount on their bills of 50%, up to a maximum of £110,000. He said that was a tax cut worth almost £1.7bn.

In conjunction with the existing Small Business Rates Relief, the chancellor said the move meant more than 90% of all retail, hospitality and leisure businesses would see a discount of at least 50%.

Business rates in the retail and leisure sectors have already been reduced during the present financial year following the rates holiday during the pandemic.

Eight ways the Budget affects you and your money

Taxes cut on sparkling wine and draught beer

The Treasury has been carrying out a wider review of business rates.

In his Budget speech, Mr Sunak confirmed they would be retained and reformed. “We on this side of the House are clear that reckless, unfunded promises to abolish a tax which raises £25bn every year are completely irresponsible.”

However, he said the system would be made “fairer and timelier with more frequent revaluations every three years”. beginning in 2023.

In addition, from 2023, all firms, not just in retail and hospitality, would be able to make improvements to their property without having to pay extra business rates for 12 months.

The reforms also include a new relief for firms that invest in green technologies, such as solar panels and heat pumps.

‘Incredibly fragile’

UK Hospitality chief executive Kate Nicholls: “We have been lobbying hard for significant reform of the outdated business rates system and therefore very much welcome the chancellor’s move today to extend the 50% business rates relief for the hospitality and leisure sector for the next financial year.

“The devil will be in the detail, though, so we look forward to learning to what extent it will benefit businesses.”

Ms Nicholls also said announcements simplifying, and in some cases cutting, alcohol duties were “great news” for pubs, bars and restaurants and “will benefit all”.

However, she added: “Positive as these announcements are, hospitality remains incredibly fragile, facing myriad critical issues. Rising utility bills, wage bills and food and drink prices have resulted in 13% inflationary costs that businesses are having to absorb at the same time as they navigate severe supply chain issues and chronic staff shortages.

“Given this toxic cocktail, it is imperative the government go further to support businesses in our sector.”

She said the best way to do that would be to keep the current lower rate of 12.5% VAT on hospitality.

“The chancellor has been bold and radical with alcohol duty – we urge him to adopt the same approach when implementing root and branch reform of business rates, to ensure industries share the burden equally.”

Elsewhere, the director general of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), Shevaun Haviland, said the chancellor had listened to the BCC’s “long-standing calls for changes to the business rates system and this will be good news for many firms”.

“It will provide much-needed relief for businesses across the country, giving many firms renewed confidence to invest and grow.”

CBI director general Tony Danker said the chancellor had made “real strides in making the system more palatable for businesses in the shorter term. More frequent valuations, wider reliefs and improving the incentives for firms to decarbonise their premises is what firms have been calling for”.

However, he added that the “hard truth” was that “the government missed the opportunity to truly reform a business rates system that diminishes Britain’s high streets and factories”.

Julian Bird, chief executive of Society of London Theatre and UK Theatre, welcomed the move, saying it would “provide venue operators with the cushion of a lower cost base as they reopen and develop an audience post-pandemic.

“The 100% improvement relief for business rates, providing 12 months relief from higher bills for occupiers where eligible improvements to an existing property increase the rateable value, from 2023 will encourage innovation and enhancement of our theatre buildings,” he added.

How has the Covid-19 pandemic changed cycling in Dublin City? – Weekly News & Analysis

Since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic, people have looked for alternative methods of travelling to avoid busy public transport. Eibhin Kavanagh investigates how the pandemic is affecting cycling in the city.

Is cycling in Dublin City safe? Photo by Eibhin Kavanagh
With our movements once again restricted, people in Ireland are limited to travelling within 5km of their homes. Walking and cycling have become a more popular means of exercising as a result of gyms closing and sporting events being cancelled.

In the last ten years, Dublin has seen an increase in the number of people cycling. A number of bike share schemes have become well established. However, 2020 has seen an exponential increase in cyclists, which Dublin City has had to accommodate. This change, due to social distancing restrictions, means more space is required for both pedestrians and cyclists to make their way around the  city.

Councillor Michael Pidgeon talked to The City about the recent changes related to cycling in Dublin City.

“In some ways I think the people are ahead of where the city is,” Pidgeon said. “We know that outside of peak hours there are now more people cycling than there were at this time of the year last year; there’s been a huge increase.”

Dublin City Council projected  a 200% increase of cyclists in Dublin City from 2019 to 2020.This would be an increase from 13,131 to 39,000.

2019 Figures Likely Future Change Potential Future Figures
All Public Transport 116,287 80% Capacity Reduction 30,000
Car 57,985 Approx. 30% reduction 41,000
Taxi 2,661 Assume 30% reduction 1,900
Walk 24,691 Target 100% increase 50,000
Cycle 13,131 Target 200% increase 39,000
Goods 983 No change 1,000
Motorcycles 1,485 No change 1,485
Total (persons) 217,223   164,385

The Canal Cordon Count was analysed by Dublin City Council to determine where the greatest demand for walking and cycling was recorded. The table below shows the number of people crossing the canal cordon (both directions) during the morning peak period from 7am to 10am in November 2019.

Source: Dublin City Council
From 1997 to 2019, the number of cyclists crossing this cordon heading into the city centre between 7 am and 10 am increased by 133%, from 5,628 to 13,125.

The number of cyclists remained between  4,000 and 6,000 between 1997 and 2010 before increasing by approximately 15% year on year until 2015 when the increase slowed up until 2017.  There was a small decrease in 2018,  but cycling numbers increased by 7.3% in 2018 and 2019.

Source: Dublin City Council
According to research conducted by the Road Safety Authority, 4 in 5 cyclists are injured on urban roads. More cyclists are  injured during morning and evening commutes. Of all collisions involving another vehicle – 4 in 5 cyclists are injured by cars. 1,056 cyclists were injured in collisions in 2018.

In Dublin, the number of cyclist deaths since 1997 has remained relatively low with a slight increase in 2017, according to figures collected by the Road Safety Authority.

Dublin has over 120 miles of cycle routes. While changes have been ongoing to improve cycling infrastructure in the city, especially since lockdown in the spring, the demand is high for safe and accessible cycling.

“It felt like at the start of the pandemic there was a real understanding that we needed to take more space for cycling to encourage more people to do it, but it feels like that momentum has dropped a bit,” said Pidgeon. “So, I think that we need to get that going again.

“In terms of infrastructure, I think the big changes we have seen are some of the temporary measures along the quays, particularly along the northside quays.”

Some of the Cycle Safety interventions introduced since April include the installation of Nassau Street contra-flow cycle track from Clare Street to Dawson Street, the partial installation of key sections of the Interim Liffey Cycle route, removal of on-street car parking from Inns Quay and Ormond Quay, and a section of work from Church Street to Ha’penny Bridge, according to Dublin City Council.

Dublin City Council also discussed other plans to ensure safe cycling in the city, including the reduction of the number of traffic lanes to accommodate protected cycling facilities on both sides of the road, while maintaining a balance for other required services. While there have been major changes made within Dublin City Centre to ensure safe cycling, other parts of the city have yet to see changes that will make cycling accessible and safe.

“One of the things is to start looking at the urban villages, so instead of just focusing on the very core city centre, you would be looking at areas like Inchicore, Rialto, Stoneybatter, Phibsborough, Rathmines,” Pidgeon said in relation to making cycling consistent for everyone.

“What we seen in the pandemic is that people are happy enough to stay within a few kilometers of where they live, so we shouldn’t just be designing a cycle lane with a view that will just take office workers from the suburbs to the city centre, because that’s not what the demand is right now. That’s important, we should definitely do that, but it will have to also be about making sure that local routes around your home are safe.

“There’s still a lot to do, but equally I’d like to say that cycling in Dublin City is safe. There’s a perception of danger that I don’t think is entirely there. There’s a lot the city needs to do to feel a lot safer and be safer with segregated lanes, but if anyone’s considering it, I’d say just ask a friend who does cycle regularly and they can show you some good routes give you some tips and you’ll be up and running in no time.”
