Wales’ Chief Medical Officer, Chief Nursing Officer and Director of Social Services and Integration have made simultaneous appeals to their colleagues to sign-up to support those affected.

Final-year students will also be offered work in the NHS to help boost the workforce over the coming months.

Chief Nursing Officer Jean White said:

These are extraordinary times, which call for extraordinary measures to be taken to respond to the health needs of the people of Wales.

I am appealing to all health professionals who are able to help at this time to make themselves available – our National Health Service needs you. Wales needs you.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Frank Atherton said:

I would like to reassure NHS Wales staff and the people of Wales that we are doing all we can to support health and social care organisations during this extremely challenging period.

Our health service and our excellent health workers need all the support and help they can get. Our nation’s health depends on it.

The Welsh Government’s Director of Social Services and Integration, Albert Heaney said:

I want to reassure our dedicated social care sector that we are working with partners to ensure we protect our frontline social care staff, who play such a crucial role in caring for and supporting the vulnerable in society.

Social Care Wales has written to the workforce and to employers to outline the measures it is taking, including how it will register those offering their invaluable experience to return and assist this collective effort.

We want to welcome you back in to the fold.”

The plans are part of the extensive work to prepare the NHS and social care sector to provide expert care for the predicted number of people who are likely to need care as a result of contracting coronavirus.

People who have left or retired in the last three years will be asked to re-register with their relevant professional bodies. They will be asked what role they could play and how much time they can dedicate.

All returning staff will be able to ‘opt-in’ to a register to fill a range of clinical and non-clinical roles across the NHS and social care sector, based on their skills and time away from practice.

Already more than 5,000 letters have been sent to retirees across a range of roles.

The Welsh Government is also currently exploring ways to harness the skills of students who are keen to contribute. Final-year medical students, student nurses and student social workers are being offered the opportunity to take on temporary, fully-paid roles to further boost the frontline.

Those who join will be given a full induction and training.

Welsh Rugby Union | Wales & Regions | Dragons lose out in Glasgow

Rhodri Williams grabbed two tries, but the Dragons still went down 34-19 at Scotstoun against a Glasgow Warriors side that moved into third place in Conference A with a bonus point win.

Acting skipper Williams gave the visitors the perfect start with an interception try in the opening minute. That forced Glasgow to dig deep and they led 17-7 at the break thanks to tries from Tim Swinson and the first of a brace from hooker Grant Stewart.

Sam Davies made a brilliant break to pave the way for his half-back partner Williams’ second try and the Dragons did well to stay in touch. In the end, though, they were outgunned by five tries to three and headed home with nothing to show for their efforts.

Davis converted two of the tries and the third came from Ashton Hewitt on the wing. Glasgow responded with a second try from Stewart in the second half and further touchdowns from centre Huw Jones and Fijian Mesu Dolokoto.

Peter Horne converted three of the home tries and added a penalty to complete the scoring and the defeat leaves the Dragons 13 points behind the Cheetahs, who were also beaten in Ulster, in the race for fourth place. The Dragons have a game in hand.

The two sides meet at Rodney Parade on Saturday in a crucial game (kick-off 5.15pm).

The M4 in Wales: The reasons for the congestion and number of crashes – Welsh Business News

Drivers who drive it, and journalists who report on it, will be very familiar with the number of accidents and traffic jams on the M4.

It can seem in some weeks that there is an incident every day or two that causes long delays and, in the worst cases, a serious or fatal injury. Last month, there were four accidents on the same stretch in less than a week.

There were no serious injuries but crashes have caused hours of delays for commuters and the problem seems to be getting worse. For years, the pinch-point around Newport , in particular the Brynglas Tunnels, have constricted traffic flow and sent blood pressures soaring.

In 2018, there were two fatal accidents, five serious and 10 other accidents recorded between junction 29 at Cardiff and junction 23 at Magor.

It is the busiest part of the motorway in south Wales. Department of Transport figures show that junction 27 at High Cross sees nearly 122,000 vehicles a day.

The sheer volume of traffic could be a factor in the number of accidents, but some commuters are blaming the variable speed limits introduced to that section of the motorway in 2016, while experts say the motorway was never built for the number of vehicles that actually use it. Police say poor weather conditions are also a contributing factor.
