Another Fantastic day of Zoom Online Business Networking (2 Events down, 1 to go)!

The 3rd event of the day was the Introbiz Online Masterclass Event with Peter Wilcock, which was brilliant too.

The ex COO of Virgin Media and Author of Camel in the Tent, talked about his Sales history and his broadband history. He talked about team building, mindset and how in the early days at Comcast, he employed people with the right mind set and grew the conversion rates from the 12% industry average up to around 50% often using people with no prior cable experience but who just had the right mindset for achieving higher targets.

He gave lots of advice including the three boxes Advice for employment and for making things happen.

He said all sales guys have some or all of these but the best have all three:

1. Natural Talent

2. Good Training

3. Positive Mindset

He also said that if you wanted to achieve anything then you need to follow the next three boxes.

1. Why

2. Plan

3. Action

“Once you work out your why, you need to make a plan and once you have worked out your plan you need to take action.”

Positive Coronavirus News Roundup

#PositiveCoronavirusNews

Thom Gibbs & Harriet Barber

1 APRIL 2020 • 11:30 AM

The list of beloved cultural institutions this virus has seen off is appalling. Glastonbury, all West End productions, Fast and Furious 9, it’s enough to make you pick up a worthy book for the first time in a decade.

But there’s one hardy entity which is here to save us from pretending we understand Joyce. Give it up for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Eurovision should be a relic. It’s highly kitsch, frequently gauche and an example of the continent working together in a post-borders spirit of friendship. All things to have fallen severely out of fashion in recent years.

But the show must go on, albeit in an online audience-free format. After postponing the traditional competition two weeks ago its organisers have now announced that there will be a new show airing on the original date for the final, Saturday 16 May.

Europe Shine A Light, bringing to mind one of our nation’s finest moments in the competition…

…will bring together all 41 (forty one! I challenge you to name more than 35 European countries) songs that were entered.

They’ll be performed in remote locations, with no competitive element, and the whole thing is optimistically expected to last around two hours.

Let’s hope the traditional spirit of Eurovision remains. We want curious performance choices, mostly dreadful music but the odd legitimately excellent banger, like this year’s entry from Iceland:

Perhaps something we can do without this time is laggy video communication over long distances. There’s quite enough of that currently in our lives.

Elsewhere, people are heeding the sounds of creaking from their larders and beginning to realise there’s only so much you can stockpile, so rationing is coming to an end in several supermarkets

An app will tell you if you come into contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus. If that sounds like a dystopian future where government tracking of the populance is not only wielded, but actively welcomed by the people, well, welcome to April 2020.

Perhaps best of all, the current climate has dimmed the powers of one of the year’s most tedious days. It’s gone midday and I’m yet to see a laboured April Fools gag from a corporation.

Here’s Harriet with the rest of today’s good news.

• NHS Nightingale has officially opened at the Excel centre in East London. The 4,000-bed hospital, which was built with the assistance of the Army, will help reduce pressure on existing services amid the coronavirus pandemic.

• Social distancing is working. New research by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has estimated that before the lockdown was introduced in the UK one positive person would infect 2.6 other people – now they infect 0.62.

• The public and businesses have donated over £100,000 in just a few hours to a Donate-A-Ride scheme, which offers free trips to and from hospital to London’s frontline NHS workers.

• Japan’s Fujifilm has started clinical trials to test the effectiveness of its anti-flu drug Avigan in treating patients with coronavirus, after reports of promising results in China. Trials in China have suggested Avigan could play a role in shortening the recovery time for patients infected with coronavirus.

• A man with a 3D-printing hobby has created a production line for protective masks.  Sid Lovatt from North Yorkshire has been creating masks and visors after receiving requests from care homes, GP surgeries and his local hospital ward.

• Thailand is giving its public free mobile data for those in isolation to help people work from home and families stay connected.

• Boots UK is going to donate over 200,000 toiletries to vulnerable people and NHS workers to use between busy shifts. The donations will include hand cream, shower gel and toothpaste.

Gratitude – 10 Reasons to be Grateful for those who are currently Self Isolating – #PositiveCornovirusNews

For those who are self isolating and are depressed in down and need a pick me up, try practicing gratitude. Change your perspective on the situation and rather than looking at what you’ve lost from the current change of conditions in our external environment and think about what you have gained in your immediate, local to you external environment (the place where you are currently self isolating) and in your internal environment (“from your skin in” – a recent quote that I have learnt to describe the internal you).

If you can flip the perspective and look at the positive of any situation then you can vastly improve your mental health and increase your ability to handle external forces and situations.

Please find some of my reasons to be grateful in our current situation and other gratitudes that I think this current situation brings to most people who choose to see them and accept them!

No.1 I’m a live and kicking!

Any gratitude list needs this one as it’s the biggest reason to be grateful that you’ll ever have. It was a tiny miracle but somehow you were born and as your reading this your still alive and kicking so well done – keep up the good work. Life is full of Rich experiences so get stuck in and enjoy them!

No. 2. – Grateful For Being Locked In With Our Loved Ones

If you are locked in or self isolated then hopefully you are locked in and managing to spend more time, much more than usual , with the person or people that you love and trust most in the world and when can that be a bad thing?

If you are self isolating alone then you have access to lots of different ways of getting in touch, for Free with all of the special people in your life. See No 3..

No 3. Gratitude towards connected technology.

Getting in touch with friends and family nowadays for nothing (FREE) has never been easier so let’s be thankful for technology. Whether it’s Zoom (which seems all the rage at the moment) or old favourites like Messenger, WhatsApp or FaceTime and Skype or even old classics like the phone or texting (actually utilising your unlimited calls and texts) there is so many ways to get connected and what’s the excuse , look at all the extra time that you now have on your hands – see no 4.

4. Grateful for the obscene of a long commute to work via Rush Hour Traffic?

Having been self employed and mostly working from home for the past 8 years this is a big reason to be grateful for me. Who wants to be sat in traffic and losing 2 hours of their day that you’re never going to get back? See 7.

5. Grateful for the dress code.

I’m in charge of the dress code and can choose to wear what I like. Time to get out all the clothes that I don’t always get a chance to wear and design my own dress policy. plus I can wear loads of things that don’t need ironing and that another chore gone and some more gained time. See 7.

6. Grateful for flexibility!

Now that you are in charge of your own daily routine you can decide the rules. Get up at a time that suits you, work at a time that suits you, exercise at a time that suits you, lunch when you want and finish when you want. You are now the master of your own destiny and your setting the rules, so be flexible and adaptable to a way that suits you and your life and not to someone else’s way that you have been conditioned to confirm to.

7. Gratitude for the extra time.

Now that you’ve lost the daily commute and the ironing etc. you now have the time to exercise at home or do that extra hobby or interest that you could never really make time for. I often find it hard to make time to exercise but have been exercise regularly at home with the new found time saved and the hour given to me for daily exercise by Boris!

8. Personally I’m grateful for Online Zoom networking.

Having to turn up at real world networking something that I done regularly in the old world was time consuming and difficult to achieve too often so I used to go to an event 1 or 2 times a week but now there inline I have been doing 1 or 2 a day, and now I’m connecting with people from much further away than just South Wales.

9. Gratitude for values and appreciation!

I’m starting to realise what’s important in life and becoming a better human being and more appreciative of what we do have and that can’t be a bad thing. Hopefully these sorts of lessons will enrich human being and make them more appreciate of the important things in less and less focussed on the menial / shallow, unimportant, fake and self obsessive sh*t that sometime everyone gets obsessed with.

10. Plenty of time and free resources for learning and self improvement / self development.

There are no excuses, News the time to read a book, listen to an audio book or podcast or watch a load of you tube videos. Learn all the things you have ever wanted to know and all the skills you gave ever needed all at a touch of a button or in a book!

So in summary now is the time to take action and control of your life and your own destination. You (and I) have plefty of reasons to be grateful over the current situation so let take advantage our make it our time now!

Positive Coronavirus News as Virgin Orbit make. New bridge ventilator that can be mass produced #PositiveCoronavirusNews

Virgin Orbit has developed a new bridge ventilator that can be mass produced to help in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

The Virgin Orbit team has been consulting with the Bridge Ventilator Consortium (BVC), led by the University of California Irvine (UCI) and the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin). The group came together to design, develop and build simple ventilators to aid in the current COVID-19 crisis.

Pending clearance by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Virgin Orbit aims to start production at its Long Beach manufacturing facility in early April, sprinting to deliver units into the hands of first responders and healthcare professionals as soon as possible.

As the COVID-19 crisis worsens and the shortages of medical equipment has become more and more clear, the Virgin Orbit team has been motivated to try and help. On a normal day, the team is building rockets for space launch. While they are not medical doctors or manufacturers of medical devices, they do have a team of incredibly innovative and agile thinkers — experts in designing, fabricating, programming, testing — who are eager to lend a hand.

Virgin Orbit contacted Governor Gavin Newsom last week to see what they could do, and were directed by his office to the California Emergency Medical Services Authority (CEMSA) and put in contact with the BVC.

The BVC is a team of brilliant doctors, medical device experts, and researchers at UCI and UT Austin who are working around the clock, sharing ideas across a broad national and international network to share best practices and design insights and to accelerate progress on solutions to this equipment shortage.

Today, complex, high-end, ICU-capable ventilators are sometimes the only option available for moderate cases — for people who don’t necessarily need intensive care or have partially recovered. By supplying “bridge” ventilators, Virgin Orbit’s device can free up those critical resources for the most ill.

“We are all heartbroken each night as we turn on the news and see the predicament facing doctors and nurses as they heroically work to save lives,” said Virgin Orbit CEO Dan Hart. “I have never seen our team working harder. Never seen ideas moving quicker from design to prototype. We are hopeful that this device can help as we all prepare for the challenges ahead.”

Virgin Orbit engineers have taken rapid scaling into account from the beginning of the design process, taking advantage of the most common and robust manufacturing and assembly processes. The company’s aim is to have a functioning, deployable bridge ventilator in production in early April. Virgin Orbit would continue on to rapidly scale up to mass production in its Long Beach facility, in addition to potentially activating other manufacturers as soon as the new device is reproducible and production-ready.

“We face a slow-motion Dunkirk, and getting ventilators out there is very important to save lives,” said Dr Brian JF Wong, assistant chairman of otolaryngology at UCI. “The demand outstrips supply, so it is important the government, industry, academia, non-profits, and the community work together to identify solutions, and design and construct them as fast as possible.”

Positive Coronavirus News – Preparation – #PositiveCoronavirusNews

We are better prepared now for future Pandemics…

This pandemic caught the world by surprise, with even the top leaders not expecting this unprecedented pandemic.

However, we will learn from our mistakes, making the next one easier to navigate.

Dr Shmerling: “The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed shortcomings in healthcare systems throughout the world that provide an opportunity to improve them.

“For example, a faster global response, better and quicker distribution of testing kits, and more coordinated and coherent public messaging should be expected the next time around. (No guarantees, of course.)”

Positive Financial News from the FT – Positive Coronavirus News #PositiveCoronavirisNews

We may have passed peak uncertainty and there is definitely a reason to start buying again — carefully

A food delivery courier passes a closed Louis Vuitton store, operated by LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE, in central London, U.K., on Tuesday, March 24, 2020. The U.K. is in lockdown after Boris Johnson ordered sweeping measures to stop people leaving their homes

Everyone in the global financial market wants the same thing. They want to find a bit of data they can absolutely believe to be accurate and they want to use it to cut the risk levels embedded in their portfolio.

Too bad. They can’t have accuracy on anything and there are no low risk assets to buy. That everyone knows both these things explains the hysterical swings in indices this week. By Friday, nine trading days in March had made it on to analyst lists at Bianco Research as the biggest one-day gains and losses since the second world war. No other month comes close.

All is not lost, however. It is possible that we are near — or have even passed — the peak uncertainty bit of this crisis.

We know for example that Covid-19 cases probably peaked in China in early February, and now look to be peaking in Italy. We also know that China is recovering fast: according to Macquarie, coal consumption is at 95 per cent of the normal level for this time of year, traffic congestion is normalising and car sales are even rising again (slightly). The consensus appears to be that China is 85 per cent back to normal.

We also have a sense of just how bad things were at their worst in China: industrial profits fell by 38 per centin February. So we have a rough — very rough — guide as to what might happen elsewhere, leaving aside second round infections. Think: a month of complete lockdown, followed by a few slightly easier months and, barring any new horrors, a return to a new kind of normal by early June.

We know one other important thing too: governments and central banks are prepared to blow more than the doors off our current monetary and fiscal systems to get their economies to the other side (30 per cent of the world’s population is in some form of lockdown).

They are prepared to blur the line completely between monetary and fiscal policy, with unlimited money creation and spending, to try and replace the parts of the economy they have shut down. The new package from the US comes in at nearly $2tn, which is a genuinely stunning 9.5 per cent of gross domestic product — or what GDP once was. Total global fiscal stimulus now comes to about 3 per cent of global GDP.

You might not like all of this. You might note that no amount of cash can make restaurant bookings rise from zero when the collapse in growth is due to physical restraint. And you might be terrified of the post-virus consequences of what amounts to helicopter money, as there will be no option but to monetise government debt from here on. But it does at least provide a clarity, of sorts.

Passing peak uncertainty is not the same at achieving certainty. But some forecasts are coming back into the market. US earnings are expected to fall by up to 60 per cent over the next couple of years, rather than rise this year by 10 per cent or so, as was expected in January. And the GDP of most economies is expected to fall by something like 35 per cent during the periods they are locked down: this, at least, is what Capital Economics suggests.

What about equity markets? We have some sense now of where we are going. We also know that markets tend to turn three months or so before economies do. So should we assume that this has been the fastest bull-to-bear-to-bull turn in history, where some of the worst short-term fundamentals ever have been overwhelmed by the greatest stimulus package in history?

In-out-and-in-again in just a month would be too brave a call. If this crash works like most crashes, there is every chance that we will test the lows again. Just ask any technical analyst! But there is definitely reason to start buying.

The first thing to note is that even after the bounces of this week, equities are no longer expensive. So-called Shiller price to earnings ratios, one of the better indicators of long-term value, show that equities, particularly outside the US, are at 20-year lows at least.

It’s also worth noting, as Pictet’s Luca Paolini points out, that while you might think you have just lived through one of the greatest bull markets ever, if on Wednesday you had looked at the last 10 years only, some 90 per cent of global markets were showing negative returns.

It’s also hard to see the alternative to stocks. The bond market is hardly a long-term safe haven. Cash isn’t either: in the short term, too many dominoes are falling in too many places to be sure of the financial system. In a world of limited crisis hitting unlimited stimulus, inflation is also a worry.

So buy for the long term, but buy carefully. There is a good argument that in a time of unbounded quantitative easing, it doesn’t matter what you buy. All equities, all assets even, will move in tandem. But why take the risk? In most bear markets everything goes down. But not everything comes up again.

So buy the things that probably will. Market leaders with little or no debt, experienced management, operating in sectors that offer some relief during lockdowns. And think about the Fangs: Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Google. The giant tech stocks that led the US bull market for the last decade had become so stupidly expensive that many thought they would also trigger its end. Instead they are the companies providing the few services we now really need. You can’t put a price on that.
