‘I never thought Harry Kane would be this good’, says former teammate Andros Townsend, as Tottenham striker aims for EARLY injury return

‘I never thought Harry Kane would be this good’, says former teammate Andros Townsend, as Tottenham striker aims for EARLY injury return

Andros Townsend has admitted he never expected former Tottenham teammate Harry Kane to become the world-class striker he is now, amid reports he could be back sooner than expected from injury.

Spurs have been without their talisman since New Year’s Day when he suffered a hamstring injury in a 1-0 defeat to Southampton.

Kane had an operation earlier this year on his injured hamstring

The 26-year-old needed an operation and Jose Mourinho feared he would be without his key frontman for the rest of the season.

However, according to The Sun, Kane could be back playing in just SIX WEEKS as he eyes a return in early April, which would be a huge boost for Tottenham and England.

Kane has been a huge miss for Spurs, who have won just three league games since losing the vice-captain, who before his injury scored had 17 goals in 25 games.

And Townsend, who came through Tottenham’s academy with the England skipper, conceded to talkSPORT he ‘didn’t see it coming’ that his old friend would become one of the world’s best players.

Harry Kane is one of the world’s most lethal finishers

Harry Kane and Andros Townsend go way back to their days in Spurs’ youth ranks

“Harry is one of the best strikers in the world and I didn’t see it coming, but he always had the foundations to do it,” the Crystal Palace winger said on the White and Sawyer show.

“From the first time I saw him he’s always had an incredible ability to score goals.

“Maybe he didn’t have the mobility he does now, or maybe he was half a yard slower, but he always possessed that ability to score left foot, right foot, from any position on the pitch.

“And in the last three or four years he’s been in the gym, he’s bulked up, he’s got quicker, he’s got stronger, he can head the ball, he can run.

“He’s pretty much an all-round player now and one of the best in the world, and rightly so.”

Man Utd ‘rebuild’ as Champions League absence proves costly | Nasdaq

Feb 25 (Reuters)  Manchester United MANU.N are in “rebuild” mode as the English soccer club chases a return to the European Champions League, Executive Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward said after financial results were dented by the team’s absence from this season’s tournament.

Woodward has been backing United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to forge a team that mixes top talent from around the world with young players from its academy.

“We are pushing for a strong finish in the Premier League, the Europa League and the FA Cup as we enter the final third of the season,” Woodward said in a statement.

“The foundation for delivering the long-term success that we are all working towards is in place as we implement our plan and our footballing vision with Ole.”

Liverpool announce £533m turnover and £42m profit last year – despite spending a record £223m on players

Liverpool announce £533m turnover and £42m profit last year – despite spending a record £223m on players

Liverpool have announced a pre-tax profit of £42million last year, despite a record £223m investment on players.

The Reds also achieved a turnover of £533m for the financial year of 2018/19, which did not take into account their Champions League win over Tottenham Hotspur in June.

Liverpool are about to become a financial powerhouse in world football once again

While the figure of £42m is well below the record £125m profit for the year ending May 2018, the rewards are being felt on the pitch with the club four victories away from winning their first league title in 30 years.

Figures released on Thursday for the financial year to May 31, 2019 incorporate the purchases of Alisson Becker (£65m), Naby Keita (£52.75m), Fabinho (£43.7m) and Xherdan Shaqiri (£13m).

It also includes the increased costs of new contracts for 11 players, including captain Jordan Henderson, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold – who have all played a key role in helping Jurgen Klopp’s champions-elect establish a 22-point lead at the top of the table.

Some of that cost was offset by sales including Danny Ward (£12.5m), Danny Ings (£20m) and Dominic Solanke (£19m).

Dominic Solanke joined Bournemouth in January 2019 for £19m.

Income was also boosted by Champions League success, although as victory in the final in Madrid came in June the prize money from winning a sixth European Cup will be counted in the current financial year.

“This continued strengthening of the underlying financial sustainability of the club is enabling us to make significant investments both in player recruitment and infrastructure,” said chief operating officer Andy Hughes.

“Being able to reinvest over £220m on players during this financial period is a result of a successful business strategy, particularly the significant uplift in commercial revenues.

“The cost of football, however, does continue to rise in transfers and associated fees but what’s critical for us is the consistency of our financial position, enabling us to live within our means and continue to run a sustainable football club.”

The Reds lifted the European Cup for a sixth time last June

Turnover increased during the period by £78m to £533m with media revenue increasing by £41m to £261m, commercial revenue increasing by £34m to £188m and match revenue increasing by £3.5m to £84m.

The rise is a result of a new Champions League broadcasting deal which began during this period, finishing a close second to Manchester City in the Premier League and higher partnership and merchandising value, with Liverpool signing their first training kit sponsorship deal with AXA.

“What we’re seeing is sustained growth across all areas of the club which is aligned to the recent performance on the pitch,” added Hughes.

“Since this reporting period we have continued to reinvest in the club’s infrastructure, and we look forward to the opening of our new (£50m) training base at Kirkby ahead of the new season which will provide first-class facilities for our players and staff.

“We have also just completed a second-phase consultation on a proposed expansion of the Anfield Road stand which could see an increase in the stadium’s capacity.

“These financial results and this sustained period of solid growth is testament to our ownership, Fenway Sport Group, who continue to support the club’s ambitions and continue to reinvest revenues both in strengthening the playing squad and the club’s infrastructure to build for the future.”

Barcelona would have to pay more than £200m to sign Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane from Liverpool due to ‘Coutinho clause’

Barcelona would have to pay more than £200m to sign Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane from Liverpool due to ‘Coutinho clause’

Barcelona would have to pay Liverpool more than £200m to sign Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane due to a ‘Coutinho clause’.

The last time Liverpool did business with Barcelona was in January 2017 when Philippe Coutinho swapped Anfield for the Camp Nou in a £142m deal.

It looks unlikely that Salah or Mane will join Barcelona

Liverpool spent that money on Virgil van Dijk and Alisson who shored up their defence as Jurgen Klopp’s side won the Champions League and are now just four wins away from their first Premier League title.

After losing players such as Javier Mascherano and Luis Suarez to Barcelona, the Reds negotiated a deal during the sale of Coutinho that would force the Catalan giants to pay a premium over any other club hopeful of signing their star players, according to the Mirror.

Reports in Spain suggest the premium stands at £89m, meaning Barcelona would have to pay this on top of the agreed transfer fee.

Salah and Mane are in fine form so far this season, with the pair netting 28 goals between them and Transfermarkt estimates the value of them at £135m each, making them Liverpool’s two most expensive players.

So Barcelona would have to pay £225m with the premium applied to sign either one of Liverpool’s most prolific goal scorers who were part of a three-way tie for the Premier League golden boot last season with Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Mane has been linked with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid but speaking to Norwegian broadcaster TV2 he revealed he loves life at Anfield.

He said: “I am very happy to be part of this great club and I enjoy it.m

“Hopefully I stay here forever. I’ve been to some clubs around the world, but Liverpool is unique. It’s like a family.

The clause is in play until the end of 2021, after which normal rules will apply and Barcelona will be looking to tempt Liverpool’s players to the Camp Nou again.

Premier League launch Hall of Fame to recognise legends of the league who have shown ‘exceptional skill and talent’

Premier League launch Hall of Fame to recognise legends of the league who have shown ‘exceptional skill and talent’

The Premier League has revealed plans to launch an official Hall of Fame, with the first two players to be inducted next month.

The Hall of Fame aims to recognise and celebrate the ‘exceptional’ skill and talent of those who have graced the Premier League since its inception in 1992.

The Premier League began in 1992, becoming a global phenomenon

A shortlist of further nominees will be announced the same time the two initial players are inducted, with fans invited to help select the next group of former stars to join the 2020 class.

The only stipulations for inclusion are candidates must have retired and only a player’s Premier League career is considered.

“Since 1992, the Premier League has been home to world-class players who have defined generations and provided us with compelling football season after season,” said Premier League chief executive Richard Masters.

“A place in the Premier League Hall of Fame is reserved for the very best. It will be an occasion for our fans around the world to look back over the years and help us celebrate some truly exceptional playing careers.”

There are no hints regarding who the first two inductees will be, though Alan Shearer, the Newcastle legend, is one of the favourites to enter the Hall of Fame next month.

Alan Shearer is surely a candidate to be the first ever Premier League Hall of Fame inductee

Shearer retired in 2006 and remains the Premier League’s all-time leading scorer, having netted 260 goals for Southampton, Blackburn and the Magpies

Other contenders to be initially inducted are considered to include the likes of Thierry Henry, the ex-Arsenal forward, as well as former Manchester United duo Roy Keane and Eric Cantona.

Each inductee will receive a personalised medallion, engraved with the year of their induction.

Steven Gerrard jokes he’s ‘on the next penalty’ as Rangers’ spot-kick woes continue in Europa League win

Steven Gerrard jokes he’s ‘on the next penalty’ as Rangers’ spot-kick woes continue in Europa League win

Steven Gerrard joked he would take Rangers’ next penalty after watching his side fail to convert from the spot during their Europa League match on Wednesday.

It didn’t affect the result of their round-of-32 tie, though, as Ryan Kent’s second-half strike saw Gers win 1-0 at Portuguese side Braga and go through 4-2 on aggregate.

Kent’s left-footed strike puts Rangers into the round-of-16

The penalty, taken by Ianis Hagi, was saved by Braga keeper Matheus but was the only negative part of the evening for Gers.

It does raise more concerns going forward as that was Rangers’ sixth penalty failure in ten attempts this season and their fourth miss in their last five.

The misses have come from a variety of players, too – captain James Tavernier was taken off penalty duties after his third miss of the season, then Alfredo Morelos in the Betfred Cup final, Scott Arfield and now Hagi have failed to score. Jermain Defoe is their only successful scorer.

Hagi is the latest Rangers player to fluff his lines from the spot

After the game, Gerrard, who scored 82 per cent of his 57 penalties at Liverpool, joked he may need to show the Rangers players how it’s done.

He told BT Sport: “I’m on the next one!

“We are trying to find a solution in that area, penalties are tough especially in pressure situations.

“We have some younger players but we will try to find the next solution … and if all else fails I take them myself!”

Rangers are through in the Europa League but their form from the spot will be a worry

Rangers now must wait to learn who their round-of-16 opponents are and they could be pitted against long-time rivals Celtic if the Hoops get through their tie against FC Copenhagen on Thursday.

And Gerrard says he and his players will be “ready for whatever comes our way.”

He added: “This is a team who finished top of the group and hadn’t lost to anyone else under this manager.

“Over the course of the match, the players deserve this, this is no fluke. It is something that has been earned with sheer hard graft.

“I am proud of the players – to a man they were outstanding.

“It is one thing giving a team a game plan, but you have got to trust them to carry it out. I thought they were faultless, certainly out of possession.

“The game plan was to go out and soak it up at times but also carry a threat.

“What we need to do is enjoy tonight.

“We will be really proud when we sit there and we’ll be ready for whatever comes out way.”

Steven Gerrard challenges Ryan Kent Rangers as he locates his unknown Braga hero

Steven Gerrard challenges Ryan Kent Rangers as he locates his unknown Braga hero

Overjoyed Steven Gerrard threw a paternal arm around his players and told them that they made him proud.

The Rangers boss has amassed praise on his team for their heroes in Braga as they secured an extraordinary 1-0 victory and passage in the last 16 of the Europa League.

Ryan Kent’s second half gave the Light Blues a 4-2 aggregate victory when they became the first Scots since Celtic against Blackburn in 2002 won both stages of a knockout round in Europe.

The Rangers are tied in Nyon, although Gerrard refuses to consider taking on Neil Lennon’s team at this stage if they see Copenhagen tonight.

Gerrard has taken a verbal stick for his players in the past few weeks as internal waste has almost cost them a chance to win the Premiership this season.

But he has done nothing but pay tributes on them in Portugal for an extraordinary victory and performance of immense tactical nous, even if Ianis Hagi has missed his sixth free kick from the 10 assigned this season.

Gerrard said: “The players made the game plan and gave it to the fans and the club.

“For now, it’s about enjoying the win against Braga. We look forward to the draw on Friday and will be proud of whoever we run into.

“The players deserve all the praise that comes to them as they have taken a little in the past few weeks.

“It was a big change for a man out of control. They also went out and injured a really good team on the ball, so the job is done.

“I am very happy. The players had to make the maximum effort.

“We have played against

a high-level opposition, which is probably the best form in which it has been present for some time.

“They have a really bright young manager who knows what he’s doing while he overtook their group in the Europa League and was the top scorer.

“However, my players have been exceptional for a man in both games. I am really proud of them. “

Gerrard took one of the biggest bets of his nascent managerial career when he dropped Niko Katic and replaced rookie George Edmundson.

He was rewarded with an exceptional defensive performance when the 21-year-old hooked up with Connor Goldson and just smelled the guests.

Gerrard added: “Everyone has committed themselves to the defensive form and what was needed tonight. Against the best players and one of the best teams, you can’t do it with one unit.

“Allan McGregor was a great artist for us – I wouldn’t have sat here in this competition if it wasn’t for him.

“The collaboration of the two central backrests was also impeccable. George has been deeply involved but there is a way to experience Europe.

“At some point a manager has to trust you, whatever the challenge is. He came forward and imagined it and delivered with the help of Connor, who played as a captain, a leader.

“He’s someone who has had a bit of a stick since the weekend in St Johnstone, along with all of us, so going back and publishing that kind of performance was great.

“Connor was exceptional and he and George were supported by two full-backs on both sides who clashed with some really dangerous and first-class operators.

“The rear five were exceptional, shielded from the three in front of them. From a defensive point of view the game plan was delivered by them, so they deserve credit. “

Kent scored his first goal in Europe for the Rangers, giving them a victory that will increase the country’s UEFA coefficient and cash in his club with around £ 3 million in revenue.

In the first half he lost a team, but remained composed to win the winner in a game in which Flo Kamberi also shone on his first start in Europe.

Gerrard added: “We need that level of Ryan contribution. Recently there have been many opinions about Ryan about what kind of shape it is on.

“But it offered a great time for us and he could have had two.

“People do not give him the merit he deserves in terms of the amount of race he does for us, but he came great and scored the important goal.

“Hopefully this will make his trust in the world of good because there will be times when people are not happy with him and he is a bit up and down.

“It’s part of being a footballer in a high-level club, but some of the opinions I read recently about Ryan are ridiculous. He is the best player.

“Flo also did a really disinterested job for the team.

“Sometimes when you’re alone in Europe you have to sacrifice yourself. You have to run hard and lift the ball for us to create dangerous situations.

“That was probably the biggest game Flo played and I was really happy for him. He came in to replace Alfredo and he deserved to play. “

Kent, Kamberi and Hagi took all the super opportunities to score in the first half, but the Rangers remained composed after the break and the former

Liverpool star Kent collected the reward.

Gerrard added: “Worried about missed opportunities? When you have such moments, you will always think of going halfway.

“But the game came out exactly as we thought in terms of Braga playing five and moving the ball very quickly.

“What I was really happy with was that we were carrying a threat when the ball was shot. I was still confident that more opportunities would come.

“Braga beat Porto in a cup final, beat Sporting Lisbon, Benfica and Wolves. They are a high class opposition and we have beaten them twice in a week. “

Gerrard’s mind is already fixed on the complicated Scottish Cup tie at Tynecastle on Saturday night.

He said: “The most important thing now is that we have to back up this performance and go to Hearts and qualify for another competition. This is the priority. “

Pep Guardiola has most Champions League knockout wins as a manager as he overtakes Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho

Pep Guardiola has most Champions League knockout wins as a manager as he overtakes Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho

PEP GUARDIOLA became the most successful manager in the history of the Champions League knockout stages thanks to Manchester City’s win over Real Madrid.

The victory was his 28th in the latter rounds of the competition, meaning he moves out in front on his own.

Pep Guardiola moved in front of Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti on 28 Champions League knockout wins

Going into the game, he was tied on 27 with Sir Alex Ferguson, Carlo Ancelotti and Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho squandered the chance to take the lead when his Spurs side lost 1-0 at home to RB Leipzig last week.

With Ferguson retired and Ancelotti’s Everton not in the tournament, Guardiola took full advantage to take the lead.

Sir Alex still boasts the most matches managed in the Champions League (190) and most wins (114) in the history of the European Cup and Champions League.

Ancelotti, meanwhile, is level with Bob Paisley and Zinedine Zidane with three winner’s medals, while Guardiola remains the youngest coach to lift the Big Ears trophy at 38 years and 129 days in 2009.

Pep – who won the tournament for a second time with Barcelona in 2011 – also became the most successful manager against Real Madrid in the 21st century.

Wednesday’s win was his tenth win over Los Blancos in all competitions, moving his ahead of Ernesto Valverde and Diego Simeone.

Guardiola joined Ottmar Hitzfeld as only the second manager to win two Champions League away games at Real Madrid and the first to do so with two different clubs.

And it took the Spaniard’s tally to a total of six away wins at the Bernabeu, the most of any away manager.

Alexandre Lacazette: the forward will not push to leave if Arsenal fails to reach the Champions League

Alexandre Lacazette: the forward will not push to leave if Arsenal fails to reach the Champions League

Alexandre Lacazette has scored 33 Premier League goals in 86 appearances for Arsenal since arriving from Lyon in 2017

Alexandre Lacazette will not push to leave Arsenal if they do not qualify for the next Champions League season.

When asked if his contract had a safeguard clause for such a scenario, the France striker said he didn’t know.

“I have a contract with the club, so I don’t make sense to leave,” he said. “Everyone is happy with me at the club.”

Lacazette, 28, joined Lyon’s Arsenal in 2017 and has never played in the Champions League for the Gunners.

Arsenal are ninth in the Premier League, seven points behind Chelsea in fourth.

They could also qualify for the next Champions League if they win the Europa League, and take the lead 1-0 in Thursday night’s home game with Olympiakos at the Emirates Stadium thanks to the Lacazette winner in Greece.

Lacazette has only scored twice in ten appearances with new manager Mikel Arteta and has been a substitute in the last two league games.

“Many people can talk,” said Lacazette, whose current contract expires in 2022. “There’s always something to say, so I don’t really think about it.

“If the manager, the coach, my teammates are happy with me, that’s the most important thing.”

Celtic reportedly back proposal for Champions League reform – #Championsleague

CELTIC have given their backing to a new proposal that would require fewer matches to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League, according to reports.

The “Copenhagen Access Model” – named after the Danish club who have submitted the plan – would still see the top four leagues of England, Spain, Germany and Italy retain their four places in Europe’s top club competition, but would likely strip some clubs of a guaranteed place in the group stage.

Under the proposed format, as reported by The Athletic, all 79 clubs that have qualified from the tournament would be ranked in an “entry list” based on European results over the previous 10 years, with the top 20 qualifying directly for the 32-team group stage.

The following 12 clubs would enter in the play-off round, the next dozen in the third qualifying round, the next 13 in the second and the remaining 22 would enter at the first round of qualifiers.

Celtic have reportedly shown their support to the revised model alongside Dutch champions Ajax, who reached the semi-finals last season.

Had the suggested shake-up to the format been implemented this season, Neil Lennon’s side would have entered the qualification process at the third round – the same point where they were knocked out by Cluj earlier in the campaign.

In such a scenario, five clubs who had to compete in the play-off round – Ajax, Dynamo Kiev, Olympiakos, Porto and PSV Eindhoven – would have been guaranteed a group-stage berth. Of the quintet, only Ajax and Olympiakos qualified for the Champions League proper.

Cardiff City will be without midfielder Lee Tomlin when they welcome Nottingham Forest in the Championship on Tuesday.

Tomlin missed their defeat by Stoke City on Saturday due to a knee injury that he picked up in training and is now out for at least six weeks.

Nottingham Forest have fitness concerns over top scorer Lewis Grabban and midfielders Samba Sow and Sammy Ameobi.

Grabban and Sow have knee injuries and Ameobi has a hip problem, while striker Nuna Da Costa (groin) is out.

Match facts

Cardiff City have won nine of their previous 10 league matches against Nottingham Forest, drawing the other in December 2015.
Nottingham Forest have won one of their past 11 away league visits to Cardiff (W1 D3 L7), a 2-0 victory in November 2010.
Despite drawing five of their previous six home matches (W1), Cardiff have lost fewer home games than any other Championship side on home soil this season (W8 D7 L1), a 0-1 defeat by Bristol City in November.
In the 13 Championship games this season when Nottingham Forest have had the larger share of possession, they have managed just one victory (7.7% – D5 L7), compared to winning 14 of the other 21 matches in which the Reds have surrendered the higher share to their opponents (66.7% – D6 L1).
Nottingham Forest have lost on seven on their previous 10 trips to Welsh sides in all competitions (W1 D2), though following their victory at Swansea in September, the Reds are looking to win back-to-back games in Wales for the first time since November 2010 (1-0 v Swansea, 2-0 v Cardiff).

Gary Neville: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is world class | Football News

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang deserves to be considered world class, according to Gary Neville – with the Sky Sports pundit admitting he is among the doubters who have been won over by the Arsenal striker.

Aubameyang’s double against Everton in the Gunners’ 3-2 victory over Everton propelled the 30-year-old joint-top of the Premier League goalscoring charts with Mikel Arteta afterwards hailing his captain as “our most important player.”

Sadio Mané brings title closer for Liverpool after West Ham scare | #Football

History was made at Anfield as Liverpool established a Premier League record of 21 consecutive home wins and equalled Manchester City’s run of 18 successive top-flight victories. The landmark was created with great difficulty and greater belief. West Ham surpassed expectations in making Jürgen Klopp’s leaders look vulnerable but, like every other domestic visitor this season, they departed Anfield in the knowledge their best was not enough.

Liverpool moved to within 12 points of the slice of history that matters most – their first league title for 30 years – thanks to many of the characteristics that have come to define their remarkable campaign.

Trent Alexander-Arnold made the breakthrough for Georginio Wijnaldum and the late winner for Sadio Mané as he moved to 12 assists for the second season running. Andy Robertson continued the theme of Liverpool’s devastating full-backs by setting up Mohamed Salah for the second, converted thanks to a dreadful mistake by West Ham’s goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

At that point the visitors led through the substitute Pablo Fornals and Liverpool, sluggish for long spells, were in trouble. But they were never subdued. Klopp’s players rarely are these days. Roared on by an equally convinced Anfield crowd Liverpool found a way once more.

David Moyes has never won in 16 visits to Anfield and, even after Fornals had swept West Ham into a merited lead early in the second half, he refused to get carried away with the celebrations of his staff on the bench. Experience has taught him not to, and so have West Ham’s problems in goal this season.

Fabianski made several fine stops but was at fault for the first and the crucial second goal, letting Salah’s low shot squirm between his legs and over the line, as West Ham remained ensconced in the relegation zone without a win in seven league games.

Their problems are not restricted to the field of play either, with kick-off the signal for a mass protest towards the club’s board by the travelling supporters.

The black balloons that formed part of the West Ham protest were still being popped when Liverpool took the lead.

When Roberto Firmino saw a shot blocked inside the West Ham area the threat to Fabianski’s goal appeared over. Or so the visitors thought. The ball spun towards the corner flag where Alexander-Arnold whipped over a trademark peach of a cross for Wijnaldum to head beyond Fabianski.

Robert Snodgrass and Issa Diop reacted too late to the cross and the midfielder’s darting run but the Poland keeper was also culpable. Wijnaldum’s header was hardly bullet-like but found its target via Fabianski’s weak forearm.

It was the worst possible start to what had always threatened to be a long night for Moyes’s team but West Ham’s response could not be faulted. They were level within three minutes through the first of several dangerous set pieces, a fine header from Diop on the end of a Snodgrass corner with Alisson being caught by surprise at his near post. It was the first Premier League goal Liverpool had conceded on home soil since 4 December and prompted an outbreak of “We’re gonna win the league” from the visiting fans. Laughter emerged from the rest of the stadium.

Fabianski produced a fine save to deny Salah, Virgil van Dijk struck the crossbar with a header from an Alexander-Arnold corner and the right-back went close with a low drive from Firmino’s lay-off. Despite the chances Liverpool struggled to find their rhythm and Jordan Henderson’s absence was sorely felt in central midfield.

The departure of Tomas Soucek early in the second half through injury was significant, as the January recruit had been highly effective in the West Ham midfield, but his replacement made a greater impression.

Fornals had been on the pitch eight minutes when he stunned Anfield by sweeping the visitors ahead. Declan Rice delivered a low cross from the right, Joe Gomez was slow to react and the Spanish midfielder steered a first-time shot wide of Alisson’s despairing dive, into the Brazilian’s bottom right-hand corner.

As always, Klopp’s players refused to be derailed by a deficit or a jaded display. Alexander-Arnold stung Fabianski’s fingers with a soaring drive before Liverpool levelled courtesy of a shocking error from the West Ham keeper.

It followed a fine move, started by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s crossfield ball to Robertson and his darting run inside Snodgrass to set up Salah.

The forward’s shot was low and straight at Fabianski but squeezed through the keeper’s hands and trickled over the line. Cue despair for West Ham and greater relief for the champions-elect.

Liverpool pressed on for the record-breaking win and, somewhat inevitably, it arrived late in the day.

Alexander-Arnold was quickest to react when Gomez’s shot deflected off Noble and sailed into the West Ham area. As Fabianski advanced the full-back had the presence of mind to lift the ball over his head and there was Mané, unmarked, to tap home the winner.

There was still time for another West Ham substitute, Jarrod Bowen, to race through on Liverpool’s goal – he tried to chip the advancing goalkeeper – but Alisson made a vital, telling save to secure another three points. Only 12 more, at the very most, to go.

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville rank the greatest English club sides

Monday Night Football rank the greatest English club sides using their own points system. Do you agree with the results?

The Invincibles, Bill Shankley’s Liverpool, 1999 treble winners? The MNF panel take in-depth look at some of the best ever club sides in English football and work out just who the greatest really is

It is one of the oldest debates in football but Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have tried to settle it with the help of their own points system.

The Monday Night Football duo used a three-season period for each team and awarded points for the trophies won during that time frame.

Here are the results and, in the words of Neville and Carragher, what made each of these teams great…

1 – Liverpool (1975/76 to 1977/78)

Manager: Bob Paisley

MNF points: 23

Jamie Carragher: “I have always felt that this era was a little bit underappreciated by Liverpool because a lot of them go back to the early ’80s. Maybe that team would have beaten this team but to win a European Cup back-to-back elevates you massively. This team won a UEFA Cup too – three European trophies in three seasons. That is unbelievably special.”

2 – Manchester United – (2006/07 to 2008/09)

Manager: Sir Alex Ferguson

MNF points: 21

Gary Neville: “I don’t think Manchester United have ever had a team that had so many world-class players. They had eight or nine who were almost the best in their position. It was an unbelievable team. I think it was the greatest Manchester United team of all time.”

3= – Liverpool (1981/82 to 1983/84)

Managers: Bob Paisley/Joe Fagan

MNF points: 20

Carragher: “If you ask Liverpool fans for their greatest team, I think a lot of them would go for this one because of the names. Kenny Dalglish was certainly the best striker, Graeme Souness was one of the best central midfielders and Alan Hansen would go straight into the team as one of the best centre-backs. So, there were those huge figures.

“This team had some of the greatest players in Liverpool’s history and some of the biggest characters also. This team was almost like a machine and to do what they did with three leagues in a row, it’s not easy. In most Liverpool circles they’d say this team was the greatest, but they haven’t come out on top.”

3= – Manchester United (1998/99 to 2000/01)

Manager: Sir Alex Ferguson

MNF points: 20

United

Neville: “In a single season, to win the treble, it’s the greatest achievement of Manchester United’s history. However, that team then disappointed for two years after that in Europe. We won three leagues on the bounce but then we didn’t go back-to-back in Europe, and that is the disappointment of that team. We didn’t go on and do it again and again. The greatest teams, you go and win it again and again.”

5 – Nottingham Forest (1977/78 to 1979/80)

Manager: Brian Clough

MNF points: 18

Forest

Neville: “We did say that would have to be some context applied to these points and this is the team that makes me feel most uncomfortable seeing them in fifth place because of the scale of the achievement.

“But would they be better than the greatest Liverpool sides of that era? Probably not but the scale of the achievement just needs some special mention.

“To do what Clough did there at Nottingham Forest, his managerial achievements are right up there with anything you could ever wish for.”

6= – Arsenal (2001/02 to 2003/04)

Manager: Arsene Wenger

MNF points: 13

Jamie Carragher: “When I came up against that Arsenal team, sometimes I would be going into the game and my confidence wouldn’t be there because you didn’t feel like you could compete with them physically either.

“You knew they were better players than you but they were quicker and more powerful too. For a two or three year period, that was the best team I played against in the Premier League.”

6= – Chelsea (2004/05 to 2006/07)

Manager: Jose Mourinho

MNF points: 13

Gary Neville: “Sir Alex Ferguson knew that he was up against a special manager who was on a roll with a fantastic team. We just couldn’t compete with them at that time. Jose’s one regret of that period is that he didn’t win the Champions League with that team.”

8= – Everton (1984-85 to 1986/87)

Manager: Howard Kendall

MNF points: 12

Everton

Carragher: “The first game I can ever remember watching was that 2-0 win against Watford in the FA Cup final. The best way to describe how good it was is it was my first ever season watching football, so I think that’s the norm. That Everton team got to three cup finals on the bounce. I used to think going to Wembley was like going to Alton Towers. It was a day out you did at the end of every season. They were so close to winning the double in ’86 and that would’ve shot them right up this list. The biggest compliment I can pay that team is that if I see some of those players at functions, they are still your heroes. You still look up to them now, no matter how old you are and it will always be the same.”

8= – Tottenham (1960/61 to 1962/63)

Manager: Bill Nicholson

MNF points: 12

Spurs MNF

Carragher: “It wasn’t just the achievement of trophies with this team, it was the actual way they played football. And probably, that legacy went on for years where you sometimes looked at a player and said: ‘He’s a Tottenham player.’

“Maybe that comes from the way this team played and they had some greats.”

10= – Aston Villa (1980-81 to 1982/83)

Managers: Ron Saunders/Tony Barton

MNF points: 10

Carragher: “Ron Saunders, who passed away just a few months ago, was a bit of a legend in the Midlands. He managed lots of different clubs there, but it was actually his role at Aston Villa that he’s remembered for. The strange thing was he actually moved on before they got their hands on the famous trophy. It was Tony Barton who came in, but he produced that team. It was Dennis Mortimer that lifted the trophy and Peter Withe getting the famous goal.”

10= – Manchester United (1965/66 to 1967/68)

Manager: Sir Matt Busby

MNF points: 10

Neville: “The legacy is huge in terms of the impact, not just of that team of Best, Law and Charlton, that defined an era in Manchester, but also the recovery from the tragedy of the Munich air crash.

“There were a lot of what would be the values of Manchester United today that are attributed to that 10-year period from 1958 to 1968. In fact, when I say a lot of the attributes, I mean all of the attributes of the club today. Playing with academy players, playing with excitement and flair and ultimately playing to win all the time.

“All you attribute with Manchester United today come from that period and it’s a special period. It was an era for United where Sir Matt Busby was at the heart of it. It was pioneering and it started what the journey of the modern Manchester United is.

“When Sir Alex Ferguson took over at United he wanted to repeat a lot of the values and principles that had been achieved by the club. He respected the history of the club.”

12 – Leeds (1968/69 to 1970/71)

Manager: Don Revie

MNF points: 9

Carragher: “That was a great era for Leeds, and they were runners-up in so much. I never saw them play but they were a brilliant team that you heard so much, that Revie team. In some ways, that Leeds team, even though they won league titles, they are probably remembered a lot for losing big games, but they were there or thereabouts throughout the 70s. They were a brilliant team and hopefully we see the club back in the Premier League next season.”

Acting skipper Williams gave the visitors the perfect start with an interception try in the opening minute. Wayne Rooney scores cheeky penalty on 500th league appearance as Derby draw to Championship promotion chasers Fulham

Wayne Rooney marked his 500th career league appearance with a goal but it wasn’t enough to help Derby beat Fulham as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw at Pride Park Stadium.

The England legend opened the scoring with a delightful Panenka penalty early in the second half.

Celtic team revealed for Kilmarnock clash while Hoops waits for Scott Brown

Celtic team revealed for Kilmarnock clash while Hoops waits for Scott Brown

Celtic will wait to see if Scott Brown is fit enough to play in Sunday’s Premiership clash with Kilmarnock.

The veteran midfielder came out with a calf injury in the second half of Celtic’s 1-1 draw in the Europa League with FC Copenhagen in Denmark on Thursday and will be assessed.

Lennon hopes that Leigh Griffiths and Greg Taylor will return after losing the European game with a knee and hamstring blow respectively, while Hatem Abd Elhamed (groin) and striker Mikey Johnston (knee) remain out.

Rory McKenzie is a doubt for Kilmarnock.

The attacker suffered a blow to the leg during Sunday’s defeat against Hibernian and lost when Killie was unloaded from the William Hill Scottish Cup in an extra-time 4-3 thriller with Aberdeen.

Striker Harry Bunn will certainly be absent again with a complaint in the calf while midfielders Innes Cameron and Adam Frizzell are still confined to the treatment room with knee injuries.

Planned training

Temporary Team Celtic:

Temporary team Kilmarnock: Branescu, O’Donnell, Findlay, Hamalainen, Broadfoot, Del Fabro, Dicker, Power, El Makrini, Brophy, McKenzie, Burke, Kiltie, Kabamba, Millen, Lyle, Connell, Johnson, Koprivec.
