BAE Systems locates share surge through £1.5bn GPS deal | Business News | Sky News

You have to go back 15 years to find an acquisition as large as the one BAE Systems announced on Monday.

The company said it was buying the military Global Positioning Systems (GPS) of Collins Aerospace, the US defence contractor, for $1.93bn (£1.5bn).

BAE is also paying a further $275m for a leading airborne tactical radios business from Raytheon.

Welsh Business News – WCVA Grants

The Landfill Disposals Tax (LDT) Communities Scheme is now open following the latest round of funding from the Welsh Government. The closing date for bids is 13 January 2020.

The scheme, which is managed by the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA), has already supported more than 44 local community and environmental projects with a total of £1.7 million committed in grant funding since it was launched last year.

One of the projects that is benefitting from the fund is Cardiff University’s Community Gateway project – Grange Pavilion. Working closely with local residents, primary schools and under-graduate architecture students at Cardiff University, the project is transforming a neglected bowls pavilion and green into a new social community hub. The new hub will offer multiple spaces for community use, a community-focused café and garden for wellbeing, play, education, growing and biodiversity.

The LDTCS funding will contribute to enhancing the biodiversity value of the area as part of this larger programme of works.

Celebrating the success of the scheme, Finance Minister, Rebecca Evans said:

Money raised through the Landfill Disposals Tax is supporting such fantastic community driven projects, such as the Grange Pavilion. This project is an excellent example of what the scheme is all about – nurturing a resilient, welcoming and united community while benefitting the environment.

Speaking about the project, WCVA’s Grant Funds Manager, Catherine Miller said:

The Grange Pavilion project is a great example of taking a rundown community space and transforming it into an urban greenspace for the use of all generations of the local community. The community is fully engaged with the development and implementation of the project and the result will be a valued public space with increased biodiversity.

Project Lead for Community Gateway, Mhairi McVicar added:

The redevelopment of the Grange Pavilion is the result of seven years of huge efforts from so many Grangetown community members, and it’s been an absolute privilege to be able to support their vision through a partnership with Cardiff University.

The ongoing community leadership of this facility will be supported by Cardiff University, Cardiff and Vale College, Taff Housing, RSPB Cymru and Cardiff Bay Rotary Club, and we are all absolutely delighted that Welsh Government has been able to support the project through the LDTCS scheme.

Swansea Wine Merchant Makes UK Shortlist – Business News Wales

Cheers Wine Merchants, the independent, family-run business with shops in West Cross and Mumbles, has made the finals of a UK-wide shortlist for the drinks industry.

The Drinks Retail Awards are a prestigious event that is recognised for having one of the most rigorous and thorough judging processes of all the industry awards, and the second generation company is delighted with the news.

“We are over the moon,” said director Dafydd Morris, son of founder Andrew Morris, “and to make it to the finals in the category of Independent Drinks Retailer of the Year was a pleasant surprise.”
Recognised as a symbol of excellence in the trade, the announcement comes after an intensive visit from on the road judge Nigel Huddlestone, who met with several key members of staff and probed many aspects of the company.

“Neil was here for a few hours,” continued Dafydd,  “and he looked at all aspects of our business from the brands and products we stock, to our customer engagement and the overall standard of our retailing.”
While being shortlisted is an achievement in itself, the Swansea wine-merchant is also the only Welsh firm to make the finals and will be flying the flag proudly at a glittering event due to take place in the Dorchester Hotel in London next February.

How Business Owners in Wales Can Benefit from Blockchain Technology

Over the last decade, investment into tech firms has soared with over £100 million helping Welsh startups, some of it fuelled by success elsewhere in the UK, including London. However, few businesses in Wales and further afield have taken advantage of current technology trends such as blockchain technology.

Often considered synonymous with cryptocurrency, the truth is blockchains can be used as separate solutions and have already made business processes easier in an array of other industries. They have prevented odometer fraud in car sales by recording vehicle history, helped assign royalties in the music industry to prevent disputes and much more.

Every Welsh business owner can benefit from blockchain technology and here’s how.

1. The Obvious Benefit

Although blockchains are not tied to cryptocurrency, businesses offering to accept crypto payments are utilising the blockchain and widening their market. Offering to accept bitcoin in your Welsh business may enable you to attract customers from other nations because they can avoid currency conversions and bank fees.

To get started you will first need to find a reliable Bitcoin wallet. You may want to consider the Luno Bitcoin wallet due to its security record and sought-after features.

2. Smart Contracts

When you agree to a process with a business partner such as a supplier, working out the terms of that agreement and making sure the process is followed as agreed before payment can be a minefield. Smart contracts are contracts just like these but are based on the blockchain, with payments automated once the criteria have been ticked off. They save your business time and money instead of needing third parties to create the contract.

To make use of smart contracts a reality in your business it may be best to employ or train someone in Ethereum’s smart contracts network.

3. Comply with DGPR and Security

Welsh businesses are not exempt from complying with the EU’s latest GDPR and must be able to secure the data they hold on employees and customers. The blockchain can be moulded into a way of doing this. It is beneficial because blockchains are bulletproof when it comes to security, but they also create public visibility on what data you hold. This makes sure data processing within your company is transparent between you and them in the event they want their data to be removed.

Not Ahead of the Game?

It is not just Welsh business owners who have yet to explore the true potential of blockchain and its benefits. From New York to Melbourne, business owners have been reluctant to adopt the technology and incorporate it into daily operations.

This reluctance can be seen as a positive because it provides an opportunity for your business to get ahead and stand out from competitors. Start simple by accepting cryptocurrency payments to widen your market. Once you start to understand more about blockchain technology benefits, you may be inclined to add it to other places within your business.

A Welsh-only brand worked wonders for my business – it would have worked for the Senedd, too – Nation.Cymru

Finally, the Labour Party in Wales have openly and honestly shown their contempt and lack of respect towards the status of the Welsh language and the branding of our identity for the 21st century.

In refusing to acknowledge and establish once and for all the historical importance of the term ‘Senedd’ in our nation’s history, the majority of Assembly Members have turned down the opportunity to kick start the international re-branding of our country, and for the time being have possibly stifled the dream of a million Welsh speakers by 2050.

On the grounds of ‘inclusiveness’, the AMs have painted a false picture of Welsh society in 2019. Should we now have a ‘Chapel Curig’ sign in the heart of Eryri? Shall we have English versions of the names of our homes and villages in the crusade for ‘inclusiveness’?

Is it lack of knowledge which has driven these AMs to draw their conclusions, or is it perhaps (and hopefully) a lack of confidence?

Ironically 30 years to the week that the assembly voted against using the term ‘Senedd’ as sole title for our political elected institution, I started my dream of establishing a business, which would be run solely through the medium of Welsh under the banner of a Welsh only title.

30 years later our brand of ‘Ceir Cymru’ has sold tens of thousands of vehicles and ploughed millions of pounds back into the local economy of Gwynedd and North Wales. Our thousands of customers include almost 40% of non-Welsh speakers who have respected and admired our use of ‘Cymraeg’ at the forefront of our business.

Our invoices, advertisements and social media are mainly issued in Welsh with hardly any use of the English language. Inclusiveness has worked effectively at Ceir Cymru through our social interaction with our customers.

When this is done tactfully, the use of Welsh only within our business structure works constructively and fosters a positive relationship in all networking aspects of the business. Suffice to say that many of our customers come to ‘Ceir Cymru’ because of the respect our company shows towards our language and culture.

We are now looking to the future and are confident that we can persist with our language policy for the next generation. The use of Welsh has been paramount in creating our business success story. Not once in 30 years have we received a complaint that we are not using ‘Welsh Cars’ as part of our brand name.

Welsh firms launch ‘Back to Business’ manifesto as polling day looms

ShareFacebook
With fewer than four weeks until the UK heads to the polls, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), which represents small firms and the self-employed, is today launching it’s Back to Business 2019 manifesto.

In Wales, FSB is calling on the next UK Government to:

Ensure that funding is protected for Wales and Welsh businesses post-Brexit
Bring Wales in line with Scotland and Northern Ireland by devolving Air Passenger Duty (APD)
Commit to the electrification of the south Wales mainline to Swansea and investing in Growth Track 360 in North Wales.
Ben Francis, FSB Wales Policy Chair, said: “For over three years, uncertainty over Brexit has hovered over the economic landscape, distracting policy makers from taking steps to help Wales’ 257,600 small businesses to grow, and in turn boost our economy.

“It’s time to get back to business.

“We are urging all candidates standing at this election to listen to, and make every effort to understand, the challenges faced by small firms in the communities they hope to represent.”

“For some time, FSB Wales has called for UK Government to devolve APD, which has the potential to open up new trade routes for Wales’ businesses and enable them to exploit new opportunities around the world.

“Furthermore, It is vital that the next UK Government end the uncertainty surrounding funding in Wales and commit to Wales receiving the same level of funding post-Brexit, the spending power for which should lie in Wales.”

Elsewhere, FSB is reiterating the need to implement the measures it has previously secured which are aimed at ending a £2.5 billion late payment crisis that destroys 50,000 businesses a year. They include:

Holding boards accountable for poor supply chain treatment by making the audit committee of every large business responsible for payment practices.
Properly empowering a swiftly appointed Small Business Commissioner.
Banning late payers from all public sector procurement opportunities.
READ
Management buy-out at Swansea based Medical Connections
FSB is urging policymakers to focus attention on how to help the UK’s self-employed population by:

Delaying changes to IR35, or ‘off-payroll working’, rules set to take effect in April 2020.
Making Universal Credit work for the self-employed, namely by reforming the Minimum Income Floor to reflect the reality that sole traders are not paid in regular monthly instalments.
Bringing the maternity allowance for self-employed mothers in-line with statutory maternity pay and introducing paternity and adoption allowances for sole traders.
Introducing a ‘legislative lock’ for the self-employed, ensuring that any measure brought forward to help employees is accompanied by a corresponding action to help sole traders.
Encouraging banks to do more to assist sole traders who apply for mortgages and introduce pension dashboards to help the self-employed keep track of their savings.
Ben Francis added: “The nature of self-employment means solutions that work for employees do not always work for the self-employed. The next UK Government should set aside time, effort and resource to right this wrong.

“Small businesses want to see a dynamic UK Government that is ambitious for business in Wales, and is committed to delivering the circumstances in which smaller firms can thrive. Our manifesto outlines the steps that the next UK Government should take if they are serious about supporting business in Wales.”
