  2. Percentages work better than dollar amounts - This has been noted in various Twitter studies - more people click on tweets which use percentages than those with $ discounts.
  3. Do not go overboard on hashtags - And interestingly, Waddington removes the tags in this tweet completely. Previous research has indicated that one or two hashtags per tweet generates the most engagement, but with usage behavior evolving, it may well benefit your campaign goals to leave them out entirely.
  4. Website Cards - If you don't have Twitter website cards enabled on your website, it's worth going through the process and switching them on. You need to add a line of code to your site, but once added, Twitter will be able to pull in summary and image info from your website to populate the card element, creating a more professional looking tweet, and maximizing your space for users to click-through. Note too that, in order for website cards to work, you need to add the URL to the end of your tweet - don't put your hashtags, or anything else, after the URL.

Unfortunately, Instagram pictures will only appear as links on Twitter.

Ideally, you want to avoid this as Tweets with images receive 18% more clicks, 89% more favourites, and 150% retweets. 

Luckily, if your Instagram content also suits Twitter and you want people to see them in their timeline with minimum fuss, you can use IFTTT (If This, Then That) to automatically upload your Instagram images to Twitter. They will then show up in people’s timelines like regular images.

It was born to address the need to organize and make sense of the overwhelming social media buzz. Thanks to active and creative user adoption, hashtag support has been added to most popular social media platforms. This article shows how different social media sites make use of hashtags. Most importantly, it shares some insight into how you can make the most effective use of hashtags for your brand.

Twitter

Twitter hashtags don’t support special characters like +, !, $, %, -, ^, &, *, etc. They do support letters, numbers and _ (underscore). There are no hashtag limits (length, number) as long as you keep your message within 140 characters (which is already limiting in itself). TipWhile Twitter hashtags are reported to increase engagement, the most efficient way to use them is through hosting and participating in Twitter chats. Here’s a detailed tutorial on hosting a Twitter chat. TipEvent hashtags (conferences, festivals, etc.) also work very well on Twitter. You don’t need to actually be in an event to network with people through the official hashtag. Event organisers usually market the official hashtag very well, which means additional exposure for you if you use it. Twitter search results are ranked by most popular. You can switch to “All” results, which are filtered by date. See image for Twitter search results.

Useful Twitter Hashtag Tools: Hashtagify tracks trending hashtags and shows “related” hashtags for any base terms you provide. TwChat lets you discover, participate in, and easily host Twitter chats. It’s also a useful tool for monitoring and archiving any hashtag streams.

Instagram

Like Twitter, Instagram hashtags don’t support special characters like +, !, $, %, -, ^, &, *, etc. They do support numbers and _. You can add up to 30 hashtags to a single photo. You can even tag your photo after publishing it. Simply list your hashtags in the comments. (Note that you can only do this for your own uploads.) Instagram hashtags increase your following dramatically, especially if you use hot and trending hashtags. TipThe best use of hashtags on Instagram is to participate in hashtag games like #tbt and #MondayBlues. Both can make your Instagram posting very consistent (e.g., you have a theme for every day of the week) and increase your following and interactions.) In my experience, people are very willing to click these specific hashtags to see the photos of other participants. TipLocation-based hashtags also work very well for Instagram. I use both abbreviated and full location names (#la and #losangeles, for instance). Instagram search results are sorted by “most recent”. Use Websta to track hot hashtags on Instagram.

Google Plus

The only official rule for Google Plus hashtag character support is “no spaces”. However, you may have trouble using any characters (which are not letters, numbers or underscore) because Google Plus will attempt to drop them from the linked part of the hashtag. There’s no way to make a hashtag with numbers only (e.g., #2015). Google Plus has perceived hashtags differently from the very start. Instead of letting users organize and monitor their conversations, Google Plus hashtags allow for greater exploration of the platform, by Google and users. This explains why Google Plus updates are auto-hashtagged, meaning that they are added automatically by Google when the topic is clearly discerned. There are no known limits to the number of hashtags you can add to Google Plus posts. TipGoogle Plus hashtags seem to work great for exposing your updates to a wider range of people. I haven’t found any research to back this up, but I’ve personally seen them work this way. Any time I use hashtags on Google Plus, I see more people outside of my extended circles like and comment on my content: Google Plus hashtagsTipUnlike Twitter and Instagram, “specific” hashtags (e.g., games, events, and locations) don’t seem to work well on Google Plus. Instead, I try to let Google understand what my update is about by using descriptive hashtags (e.g., #marketingtips). Google Plus hashtag search results seem to be ranked by popularity. Moreover, search results are powered by “related” hashtags. Sometimes the result will even miss your initial search term. See full article (link below) for Google Plus hashtag search results image! Pinterest

Pinterest hashtags have been quietly supported for some time. “Supported” means the word after the # is clickable (and only in the description). There are no official rules or limitations on the number of hashtags you can add to a Pinterest post, and Pinterest hashtags seem to support the same set of characters as most other social platforms do. Pinterest hashtags are clickable in the description. Pinterest hashtag support remains limited. If you search Pinterest by a hashtag, search results will include all types of words and phrases from the hashtag. This makes using Pinterest hashtag almost pointless. Pinterest searchTipThe only reasonable way to use Pinterest hashtags is to use them for branding, especially for cross-promotion (to further spread awareness of your event, Twitter chat, etc.).

Tumblr

Tumblr hashtags work similarly to WordPress tags. They will be linked only in the “tags” field. You can’t create an in-text hashtag by simply adding # in front of a word. Unlike WordPress, Tumblr hashtags improve the discoverability of your updates across the whole platform. Here’s a quick example: I am not really active on Tumblr, but I do post random updates from time to time. I treat Tumblr more as a curation tool rather than a social media network, so I’ve never cared about hashtags or if my updates get any visibility, which they didn’t until I used a few hashtags in this post. That day I saw a sudden spike in activity on my pretty abandoned Tumblr blog!Tumblr hashtags [Note: I did nothing special to create the spike. All I did was adding a few hashtags. Seems pretty easy, right?] You can have spaces, apostrophes, commas, dots, and many other symbols in your Tumblr hashtags. There are no limitations as to how many hashtags you can use on Tumblr, but only the first five hashtags you use are searchable. Your update will only make it to the search results if it’s an original one, not a re-blog, so don’t bother adding tags if you re-blog. Tip: Any hashtag search will bring up users who recently used those hashtags for you to follow, which means that hashtags are huge for acquiring followers on Tumblr. For Hashtags search image: “people to follow” see full article (link below)! Tumblr filters hashtag search results by “most popular” by default. You can switch this to “most recent”. Furthermore, Tumblr has a “track your tags” feature which allows anyone to add hashtag search results to their “favorite search”. There are no stats available as to which hashtags are tracked by more people, though.

Flickr

Flickr allows all sorts of symbols to be typed after the #, but seems to only link letters and numbers. While serving the same goal (e.g., organising photos), Flickr tags and hashtags do behave slightly differently. Clicking on a Flickr tag brings you to search/?tags= page, where you can filter by license, search for groups, and more. Clicking on a Flickr hashtag brings you to /explore/ page, which shows related [hash]tags and the photos with the same tags (yes, that’s confusing). These results are sorted by “most recent” by default, although you can switch to “most interesting.” Flickr explore It’s still not quite clear whether hashtags improve visibility on Flickr, or how different they are from tags, which have existed on the platform for ages. The fact that Flickr hashtags were announced and are now proactively supported in the iOS app may indicate that the whole point of a hashtag on Flickr is to make it easier to organize your photos from the iPhone.  

Facebook

Facebook hashtags support the standard set of characters that most popular social platforms support.Facebook hashtags. There are no limitations as to the number of hashtags you can add to a Facebook update. Facebook hashtag search is somewhat weird. Try searching for #california, for example. You’ll likely end up landing on a Facebook page instead of a hashtag search results page. Making hashtag search impossible on Facebook An easier way to generate hashtag search results is to simply add the hashtag after http://ift.tt/1v4E0kW (e.g., http://ift.tt/16Mrj97). You can also bring up hashtag search results by clicking on any hashtag in your Facebook stream. Facebook’s ranking algorithm is complicated. It seems to be a mix of lots of factors, including how closely you are related to the person posting the update, how often you interact with him/her, how popular the actual update is, etc. I don’t use hashtags on Facebook beyond random cross-posting from Instagram. I have also seen quite a few of my friends become irritated when someone uses hashtags, so I guess it’s too early to tell. With Instagram’s help,  however, hashtags may ultimately become widely adopted by Facebook users.

Every tool reducing the number of steps in capturing a lead should be explored, and while links that get people to your site or landing page are great, why not get people subscribing to your mailing list with one click in Twitter? 

These lead generation Twitter cards will allow you to capture an email address and the Twitter account attached to it. If you like, you could use an offer to entice people to sign up.

Other users of Twitter cards have found that open rates and click through rates on their email Newsletters are much higher on their Twitter leads, than other recipients of their newsletter.

Twitter hashtags don’t support special characters like +, !, $, %, -, ^, &, *, etc. They do support letters, numbers and _ (underscore).

There are no hashtag limits (length, number) as long as you keep your message within 140 characters (which is already limiting in itself).

TipWhile Twitter hashtags are reported to increase engagement, the most efficient way to use them is through hosting and participating in Twitter chats. Here’s a detailed tutorial on hosting a Twitter chat.

TipEvent hashtags (conferences, festivals, etc.) also work very well on Twitter. You don’t need to actually be in an event to network with people through the official hashtag. Event organisers usually market the official hashtag very well, which means additional exposure for you if you use it.

Twitter search results are ranked by most popular. You can switch to “All” results, which are filtered by date.

Useful Twitter Hashtag Tools:

Hashtagify tracks trending hashtags and shows “related” hashtags for any base terms you provide.
TwChat lets you discover, participate in, and easily host Twitter chats. It’s also a useful tool for monitoring and archiving any hashtag streams.

Instagram

Like Twitter, Instagram hashtags don’t support special characters like +, !, $, %, -, ^, &, *, etc. They do support numbers and _.

You can add up to 30 hashtags to a single photo. You can even tag your photo after publishing it. Simply list your hashtags in the comments. (Note that you can only do this for your own uploads.)

Instagram hashtags increase your following dramatically, especially if you use hot and trending hashtags.

TipThe best use of hashtags on Instagram is to participate in hashtag games like #tbt and #MondayBlues. Both can make your Instagram posting very consistent (e.g., you have a theme for every day of the week) and increase your following and interactions.) In my experience, people are very willing to click these specific hashtags to see the photos of other participants.

TipLocation-based hashtags also work very well for Instagram. I use both abbreviated and full location names (#la and #losangeles, for instance).

Instagram search results are sorted by “most recent”.

Use Websta to track hot hashtags on Instagram.

Google Plus

The only official rule for Google Plus hashtag character support is “no spaces”. However, you may have trouble using any characters (which are not letters, numbers or underscore) because Google Plus will attempt to drop them from the linked part of the hashtag.

There’s no way to make a hashtag with numbers only (e.g., #2015).

Google Plus has perceived hashtags differently from the very start. Instead of letting users organize and monitor their conversations, Google Plus hashtags allow for greater exploration of the platform, by Google and users.

This explains why Google Plus updates are auto-hashtagged, meaning that they are added automatically by Google when the topic is clearly discerned.

There are no known limits to the number of hashtags you can add to Google Plus posts.

TipGoogle Plus hashtags seem to work great for exposing your updates to a wider range of people. I haven’t found any research to back this up, but I’ve personally seen them work this way. Any time I use hashtags on Google Plus, I see more people outside of my extended circles like and comment on my content:

TipUnlike Twitter and Instagram, “specific” hashtags (e.g., games, events, and locations) don’t seem to work well on Google Plus. Instead, I try to let Google understand what my update is about by using descriptive hashtags (e.g., #marketingtips).

seem to be ranked by popularity. Moreover, search results are powered by “related” hashtags. Sometimes the result will even miss your initial search term.

Cyfe is the only tool I know of that supports searching and archiving Google Plus hashtag results.

Pinterest

Pinterest hashtags have been quietly supported for some time. “Supported” means the word after the # is clickable (and only in the description).

There are no official rules or limitations on the number of hashtags you can add to a Pinterest post, and Pinterest hashtags seem to support the same set of characters as most other social platforms do.

Pinterest hashtag support remains limited. If you search Pinterest by a hashtag, search results will include all types of words and phrases from the hashtag. This makes using Pinterest hashtag almost pointless.

TipThe only reasonable way to use Pinterest hashtags is to use them for branding, especially for cross-promotion (to further spread awareness of your event, Twitter chat, etc.).

Tumblr

Tumblr hashtags work similarly to WordPress tags. They will be linked only in the “tags” field. You can’t create an in-text hashtag by simply adding # in front of a word.

Unlike WordPress, Tumblr hashtags improve the discoverability of your updates across the whole platform.

Here’s a quick example: I am not really active on Tumblr, but I do post random updates from time to time.

I treat Tumblr more as a curation tool rather than a social media network, so I’ve never cared about hashtags or if my updates get any visibility, which they didn’t until I used a few hashtags in this post. That day I saw a sudden spike in activity on my pretty abandoned Tumblr blog!

[Note: I did nothing special to create the spike. All I did was adding a few hashtags. Seems pretty easy, right?]

You can have spaces, apostrophes, commas, dots, and many other symbols in your Tumblr hashtags.

There are no limitations as to how many hashtags you can use on Tumblr, but only the first five hashtags you use are searchable. Your update will only make it to the search results if it’s an original one, not a re-blog, so don’t bother adding tags if you re-blog.

Tip: Any hashtag search will bring up users who recently used those hashtags for you to follow, which means that hashtags are huge for acquiring followers on Tumblr.

Tumblr filters hashtag search results by “most popular” by default. You can switch this to “most recent”.

Furthermore, Tumblr has a “track your tags” feature which allows anyone to add hashtag search results to their “favorite search”. There are no stats available as to which hashtags are tracked by more people, though.

Flickr

Flickr allows all sorts of symbols to be typed after the #, but
seems to only link letters and numbers. While serving the same goal (e.g., organising photos), Flickr tags and hashtags do behave slightly differently.

Clicking on a Flickr tag brings you to search/?tags= page, where you can filter by license, search for groups, and more.

Clicking on a Flickr hashtag brings you to /explore/ page, which shows related [hash]tags and the photos with the same tags (yes, that’s confusing). These results are sorted by “most recent” by default, although you can switch to “most interesting.”

It’s still not quite clear whether hashtags improve visibility on Flickr, or how different they are from tags, which have existed on the platform for ages. The fact that Flickr hashtags were announced and are now proactively supported in the iOS app may indicate that the whole point of a hashtag on Flickr is to make it easier to organize your photos from the iPhone.

Facebook

Facebook hashtags support the standard set of characters that most popular social platforms support.

There are no limitations as to the number of hashtags you can add to a Facebook update.

Facebook hashtag search is somewhat weird. Try searching for #california, for example. You’ll likely end up landing on a Facebook page instead of a hashtag search results page.

Making hashtag search impossible on Facebook

An easier way to generate hashtag search results is to simply add the hashtag after http://ift.tt/1v4E0kW (e.g., http://ift.tt/16Mrj97).

You can also bring up hashtag search results by clicking on any hashtag in your Facebook stream. Facebook’s ranking algorithm is complicated. It seems to be a mix of lots of factors, including how closely you are related to the person posting the update, how often you interact with him/her, how popular the actual update is, etc.

I don’t use hashtags on Facebook beyond random cross-posting from Instagram. I have also seen quite a few of my friends become irritated when someone uses hashtags, so I guess it’s too early to tell. With Instagram’s help, however, hashtags may ultimately become widely adopted by Facebook users.

I think I have a problem.

I spend too much time on Facebook. I find myself constantly opening a new tab and the first letter I would hit would be “F”. Does that sound familiar to you?

While that may sound okay, it’s not. I was killing tons of productive time that I could have spent getting work done.

Today, I am happy to share the secret of saving time on Facebook.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who’d want to get more results from Facebook and spend less time there.

According to a study by Vertical Response, the following stats are a very insightful.

One third of CEOs and business owners want to spend less time on social media.
90% of those are on Facebook
15% of these people log into Facebook several times a day.

You can imagine how tough it is to run a business and maintaining an active Facebook presence. How can all of us follow the 80/20 rule and still achieve remarkable results on giant platforms like Facebook?

In order to do that, we have to understand where we’re spending too much time. Based on the insights provided by Vertical Response, the top three ways people were wasting their time on were:

Finding & posting content
Learning and educating themselves
Analyzing efforts

Here are my 4 top tips on how to stop wasting time on Facebook.

1. Get rid of distractions
There are two ways you can avoid distractions.

Less Extreme: Log out
Logging out is not a very extreme method and is quite easy to do. However, it doesn’t solve the issue completely because you won’t be able to get all your work done if you need to use Facebook.

The problem with this method is you won’t be able to get any work on Facebook done.

Pretty Extreme: Delete newsfeed
The pretty extreme method is the method that I chose for myself, which was to delete my newsfeed. I use newfeed eradicator.

That way I could focus on getting work done like finding content and educating yourself (using lists, bookmarks, etc). Since only my newsfeed disappears, I can still manage my Facebook page presence and respond to people easily.

2. Schedule content in advance
If you want to save more time, you have to schedule in advance. Facebook has a great built in feature that allow business owners to easily schedule their posts.

That way you can plan ahead to make more time in your week.

You can easily do this in one sitting and actually schedule a week worth of content. Use the spare time you have saved to focus more on responding to customers or educating yourself.

This keeps you focused and you won’t miss a day without posting any content.

3. Get the right tools
I was just speaking to a business owner the other day, not only is he managing his company, he is managing his company presence on Facebook too. He told me it was tough to find the right balance. b. Facebook’s Save
“Saving” is a new feature from Facebook that allows you to save articles that you find interesting. All you have to do is click save and head over to to your home page to view them later.

c. Favorite
Marking your favorite pages can save you time because you won’t need to constantly check your newsfeed and worrying you’ll miss its posts. When you add a page to your favorites, it will notify you when the pages are updated.

Summing up
So you see, using Facebook can be productive for your business. It’s not a time sucker and you don’t always have to waste your time when you are on Facebook. Using these tips you can easily focus your effort without stressing yourself about it.

Tracking social media performance in achieving key business objectives is critical to proving your marketing effectiveness. Without it, your ability to get additional budget, resources and (dare I say it?) keep your job are at risk.

To understand the disconnect between social media engagement and driving business results, examine these 3 data points:

88% of businesses will use social media for marketing in 2014, based on eMarketer’s projections. Social media use for business is mainstream. It’s baked into companies’ business plans. Yet don’t jump to the conclusion that businesses can measure how social media contributes to achieving their goals.
88% believe social media is important to be competitive, according to Hootsuite’s Social Business Benchmark Survey. Translation: At a minimum, you need to be present on social media to keep up with your competitors, even if you can’t figure out what it’s doing for your bottom line.
50% of the c-suite understand social media’s power based on Useful Social Media’s The State of Social Media 2014. Similarly 43% say executive buy-in is a challenge in the Social Business Benchmark Survey. Remember: you need c-suite support to get budget and resources.

So, what do businesses track to determine social media success?

Here are 12 mind-blowing social media metrics facts.

34% of executives are confident they measure social media correctly according to The State of Social Media 2014.
YIKES!!! This means 66% of executives doubt that they’re tracking social media right. This is consistent with the Social Business Benchmark Survey that found that 39% of respondents believe they can transform social media data into actionable insights.

Why do they believe that?

1. Assessing the easy-to-measure stuff.
This should be no surprise. Social media started as something marketers did on the side and backed into social media metrics later.

In The State of Social Media 2014, the top 3 metrics were:

48.7% measure activity or engagement.
47.3% measure web traffic.
47.0% measure followers or likes.
At best these metrics show that your social media marketing yields interaction. But, that’s not enough.

Social Media Explorer’s Jason Falls clarified this challenge best, “Fan acquisition means doing something to get the attention of users on a social network so they will opt in to your messaging. Customer acquisition is doing something to convince a person to purchase something.”

Actionable Social Media Metrics Tips:

You can improve your ability to convert traffic into leads or sales in the following ways.

Include a social media call-to-action to increase response. Consider driving prospects to join your email list or other interim step in the purchase process.
Use tailored landing pages to drive sales related actions. Keep the branding and scent consistent so social media followers stay and take action.
Incorporate unique tracking codes that can be measured on your sales systems. I’ve seen many firms use fewer codes and be unable to measure the origin of the sale.
2. Tracking branding.
Even traditional media has difficulties measuring branding impact. Therefore it’s no surprise that less than 1 in 5 can do so via social media, according to The State of Social Media 2014.

18.1% measure sentiment. Sentiment can be a soft metric attributable to branding.
On social media, your branding must go beyond your name and logo. It must be recognizable in an image, photo or presentation to help make an impression on your target audience without being promotional.

Actionable Social Media Metrics Tips:

Ensure your brand is social media savvy. Here are 35 social media branding attributes to help you.
3. Monitoring reputation on social media.
Based on Social Business Benchmark Survey, monitoring what’s said about your company is highly important. Specifically:

81% of respondents use social media to learn about their firm’s reputation.
79% of respondents use social media to monitor external communications.
A key reason to have social media monitoring is to track potential issues with your company, brand(s), and/or senior executives so you’re able to respond quickly and appropriately. If you’re lucky there should be nothing to track.

Actionable Social Media Metrics Tips:

Ensure your firm has a set of social media policies. Don’t just create a set of social media policies. Make sure your employees understand how to handle themselves when they’re representing your firm.
Have a social media crisis plan to respond to an issue. Be prepared. Make sure key people are on call when a crisis hits.
4. Measuring leads and sales.
According to The State of Social Media 2014, less than 1 in 4 marketers measure sales.

23.3% measure leads.
19.5% measure sales.
These metrics contribute to your firm’s bottom line. They’re the type of hard data I recommend tracking.

Yet they’re difficult to measure. In most cases, it’s not marketers’ fault. Unfortunately that’s not a good enough reason to give you more budget and resources.

Why?

8% to 46% of the time, depending on the platform, social media is the first, last or only platform touched by the customer, based on AOL research. Social media has its greatest impact on the middle of the purchase funnel where it’s difficult to track.

Actionable Social Media Metrics Tips:

You can improve your business’s ability to generate leads and sales using social media. Here are a few suggestions

Create a business blog to support sales. Focus on answering your customers’ questions and showing them how to use and style your products. Link to your product pages where appropriate.
Use LinkedIn to build relationships with prospects. Get your employees, especially your sales team, engaged on LinkedIn on a regular basis. This works better for B2B although it can be useful for supporting your B2C business through supplier and distributor relationships. (Here are some useful LinkedIn tactics to help you.)
Post presentations, ebooks and PDFs on SlideShare – B2B social media gold to get qualified sales leads. At a loss for ideas? Take the Lee Odden Epic Content Curation approach to ebooks.
Build your Pinterest presence. B2C marketers can take this social media interaction to the bank. (Here are the Pinterest tips you need.)
50% of respondents in The State of Social Media 2014 said they could track social media ROI, up from 44% in 2013. This compliments Extole research‘s finding that 52% of marketers find it difficult to measure social media ROI.

This should be no surprise. As any MBA student can tell you – without the ability track sales, you can’t calculate ROI.

5. Reducing costs and returns.
Social media can save sales and returns (a form of negative revenues).

73% of respondents value the ability to resolve customer complaints and questions on social media, according to the Social Business Benchmark Survey. These factors help convert prospects into customers and keep customers from making returns.
Actionable Social Media Metrics Tips:

Promote your social media customer service across all of your social media presences and owned media. Let people know where to get problems resolved.
Count hard numbers in terms of comments, reviews and issues to ensure that they’re handled appropriately.
In total, these social media metrics facts make the case for better connecting your social media activity with your lead generation and sales processes on your website, via phone or in your retail establishments.

To this end, it’s important to ensure that your firm’s sales and costs analytics systems can capture your social media tracking codes.
