45 Approachable Vegan Business Ideas To Start in 2021

By
Michael Ofei
Last updated:
May 13, 2021

When it comes to vegan business ideas, a lot has changed since I first published this post in 2016. At the time, I was frustrated with the lack of vegan-friendly products available.

I was confused as to why there weren’t better dairy-free ice creams or vegan fashion brands that didn’t suck.

Well, fortunately, the market caught on, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the progress made in these areas. My local supermarket freezer is now filled with vegan ice creams and there’s an explosion of ethical fashion labels paving the way.

I used to wonder how amazing it would be if there was a vegan-friendly rival to McDonald’s. Now, even Hungary Jack’s (Burger King) and Dominos offer vegan options. Who would have thought!?

My wife Masa and I have travelled the world and have seen vegan malls, nightclubs, vegan Japanese restaurants and world-class vegan pizzerias. We’re even proud owners of puffy winter jackets with remarkably no bird feathers.

While we should take a moment to celebrate this entrepreneurial progress, there’s still a lot of work to be done.

Vegan business ideas just keep on coming

I’ve had countless business ideas since becoming vegan, but with the demanding commitment of The Minimalist Vegan, I can only dream of these concepts, without the capacity to execute on them.

So in this post, I’m sharing 45 vegan business opportunities that could help any marketplace. I’ve updated this article to include more relevant ideas to match the current times.

My hope is that you can bring these ideas to life and shift the demand for ethical products and services.

These ideas are by no means revolutionary, but they do seem to be missing in many marketplaces.

We’ve also tried to include ideas that are not too large-scale and intimidating to start. It’s always best to start small and validate your vegan business before investing more capital.

Keep in mind we live in Tasmania, Australia, so maybe where you live there is much more (or less) to choose from.

If you don’t fancy yourself an entrepreneur, maybe you know someone who would like to try to start a socially conscious business? Share this post with them to see if it piques their interest.

In any case, I encourage you to reflect on all of the occasions when you’ve struggled to find a specific offering that is vegan-friendly and think about how you can help solve that problem yourself.

Note: if you’re interested, we recorded a podcast episode breaking down vegan business ideas.

I’ve broken the list down by category to help filter through content.

Alright. Below is our list of 45 vegan business ideas to start in 2021.

Vegan food and beverages

Nine times out of ten, food is the first thought that comes to mind when thinking of starting a vegan business venture. Just look at the comments in this post. The majority of entrepreneurs are thinking about getting into food.

It makes sense. Access to good food is the greatest challenge when transitioning to a vegan lifestyle.

And even though vegan food businesses are experiencing crazy growth in markets like the UK, we still have a long ways to go to make plant-based food more accessible to people around the world.

There are two types of vegan food businesses. There’s hospitality and there’s a food product. It’s the difference between opening a vegan restaurant or catering service and developing the next great vegan cheese product to be on the shelves of supermarkets.

Hospitality is a tough gig that requires incredible skill, long hours and low margins. However, if it works, cafe’s, restaurants and food trucks create a community station of vegans and non-vegans to eat together and share experiences.

A vegan food product on the other hand is more scalable with better margins. But then it can be incredibly difficult to get your product onto shelves to be able to sell enough volume for it to be sustainable.

Let’s get into some examples of vegan food and beverage businesses.

Vegan pie shop.
Vegan dog treats.
Nut cheese deli.
The vegan version of Krispy Kremes.
Start a vegan sushi restaurant.
Vegan bakery.
A healthy high-protein meat substitute.
Vegan-friendly bar or nightclub.
Start a food truck specialising in one type of food, e.g. kebabs, burgers, bowls.
Local vegan wine.
We’ve seen many vegan food businesses come and go over the years, and it’s always sad to see a beloved ethical entrepreneur shut shop. To mitigate this risk, we suggest starting with a super small operation at a weekly market.

This allows you to test your concept and see how customers respond. Be honest with yourself and avoid delusion. If no one is buying your food, it hasn’t hit the mark. Get feedback on your food and improve your product.

From there you can slowly scale up to catering, a food truck then eventually a commercial space. But do it in stages, and take the time to build a loyal following. I wish you the best of luck!

Vegan services

An overlooked vegan business opportunity is within services. I can’t tell you how many times I needed help and struggled to find a professional who was also vegan.

Working with a service provider with shared values gives vegan customers reassurance and confidence to work together without being judged.

If you have skills in a particular area, a services business is one of the most affordable and quickest businesses to start. Let’s look at some ideas below.

A freelance illustrator who services vegan-friendly small businesses.
Company accountant or bookkeeper for online vegan entrepreneurs.
Photographer servicing compassionate businesses.
Project manager for organic and vegan shop fit-outs.
Social media manager for vegan businesses.
Copywriting services to help build the profile of vegan entrepreneurs.
Study to become a health professional that serves the vegan community using natural cruelty-free practices.
Start a salon offering and using only vegan hair care products.
Become the first vegan car detailer in your area.
Vegan personal trainer that specialises in high-performance athletes.
Become a vegan-friendly vet (this one is lacking!)

Vegan fashion business

Animal fabrics like wool, leather and silk are often associated with premium and reliable fashion pieces. However, over the last decade, vegan materials have become more innovative, accessible and sustainable.

As consumers become ecologically and ethically conscious, the demand for high-quality vegan fashion will only increase.

Previously, starting a fashion brand was costly and thus risky. You had to hit the market perfectly to justify ordering huge quantities of stock from suppliers.

Nowadays, you can work on one design at a time, and test your concept using crowdsourcing platforms like Kickstarter and Indigogo—helping to reduce your risk and give you the confidence to scale.

It’s worth noting that vegan customers equally value fair trade practices. So where possible try to keep your production line local with relative wages to your area.

Here are some ideas for vegan fashion businesses:

Online vegan sneaker retailer.
Bamboo clothing line specialising in everyday essentials.
Organic, fair trade and vegan line of jeans.
Tailored vegan suits for men.
Start a fun vegan sock company.
Vegan activewear for specific sports.
Vegan education and media

One of the most common triggers for becoming vegan is usually based on education, be it a speech, a documentary or a book. For example, we became vegan after watching Earthlings, and our story is common.

The internet has made online education accessible to everyone. It’s never been easier to acquire creative skills in film, photography, design and writing.

Furthermore, creators are no longer at the mercy of book publishers, film studios or music labels. You can simply publish your work with the possibility of reaching an audience.

You can monetize your media through patronage, distributors, brand deals, affiliate commissions, advertising and products.

Or if you’re really ambitious, see if you can take a piece of the obscene amount of cash Netflix, Amazon, HBO and Apple are throwing at original content. Netflix for example is estimated to spend 19 billion on content in 2021!

One caveat. Because the barriers to entry for content is so low, you need to produce AMAZING content to cut through the noise. So be prepared to spend hours to become a master of your craft, or hire a talented team of creators to bring your project to life.

Here’s a few samples:

Animated YouTube channel producing 2– 3-minute videos teaching people the truth about consumerism.
A vegan-friendly childcare centre with a community veggie garden.
Vegan wedding blog producing fantastic content and advertising ethical wedding brands and services.
A science-fiction novel series with subtle vegan themes.
Partner with your local education institutions and develop a vegan chef school certification.
Produce a documentary-style podcast that captures the stories of animal cruelty, fair trade, and environmental issues.
Start a vegan screenwriting business for feature films, television, commercials, documentaries and video games.
Become a vegan comedian TikTok influencer.

Vegan technology business

Much like vegan education, we can use the internet to skill up in technology. Whether it’s learning how to code or working with developers, you have the potential to create the next greatest vegan app.

The software business can be incredibly lucrative and scalable hence the potential of attracting many investors and reaching the masses.

However, the tech world is insanely dynamic and you can fall as quickly as you can grow. So be prepared to duck, weave and adjust as market conditions change.

While tech know-how is important, the success of your startup is dependent on how well you reach product-market fit. I suggest you read the Lean Start-Up and apply the principles to developing your concept to give you the best chance of success.

This is the kind of ideas I had in mind for vegan technology based businesses.

Create an app that facilitates the delivery of food from all the vegan food options in your area.
Develop a dating app that accurately connects vegan soulmates.
Create a concierge service in the form of a mobile app that connects all local ethical tradespeople with vegan customers.
Design a line of solar-powered vegan-friendly smartphone accessories.
Invent sustainable, vegan materials to be used in various industries.
Design an interface that pulls vegan stocks and startups into one place.
Vegan cosmetics and beauty

Cosmetics have always been a massive industry, and the vegan segment of the market is benefiting. It’s predicted that the global vegan cosmetics market will be worth 27 billion by 2027!

Mindful consumers want cruelty-free, sustainable, organic beauty products without comprising on quality. At the end of the day, you need deodorants that prevent odour, makeup that enhances, skincare that helps your cells thrive.

What’s attractive about cosmetics and beauty is the consumable nature of the products. If you’re able to get customer loyalty, you’ll benefit from repeat purchases.

With all of that said, the beauty industry is brutal. You need to formulate the perfect product and at the right price point if you want any chance of success. You need to hustle at tradeshows, learn eCommerce and work with retailers to acquire customers.

Vegan customers are becoming increasingly sceptical about greenwashing, so make sure your communication and transparency of your supply chain and ingredients are airtight.

Here’s a few ideas in this area:

Develop a mascara that is vegan, fair trade, organic and eco-friendly.
Build a vegan-friendly and chemical-free nail polish company.
Create an anti-aging line of vegan skincare.
Develop a natural hair colour line that’s easy to apply and a varied colour palette.
What are your vegan business ideas?

I would love for you to share any experiences you have had with trying to find vegan businesses in your area. Also, share some success stories so others can learn from them in the comments below.

It’s time we put our money where our mouths are and support women entrepreneurs and innovators. Female-led companies don’t receive the same consideration as male-led businesses, receiving just 16 percent of business loans, despite employing over 8.4 million workers and generating $264 billion in payroll. These women-owned vegan companies are changing the game with compassionate, eco-friendly, and cruelty-free products, and we couldn’t be more excited to support them along the way.

10 Golden Rules Of Personal Branding

Creating a personal brand can be a daunting, mythical task. And one of the easiest ways to get lost in the process is to not know where to start. Even Oprah Winfrey began by going through several style iterations on a small local show before defining her voice into one of the most influential personal brands in the world.

In both our look-at-me cultural shift and evolving job market, it’s both helpful and necessary to stand out when applying for a job or starting your own company. A personal brand is for (almost) everyone. So here are 10 golden rules for creating an engaging, unique, and inviting personal brand.

1. Have a focus.

“Too many people are unfocused when it comes to press and coverage, trying to be “everything to everyone.” Decide what your key message is and stick to it,” says Cooper Harris, founder and CEO of Klickly. Her personal brand has undergone a dramatic shift—from working actress to respected tech entrepreneur and she has handled this shift by only focusing on one message at a time. Keeping your message focused for your target demographic will make it that much easier to both create content around your personal brand and have others define you.

In fact, Adam Smiley Poswolsky, millennial workplace expert and author of The Breakthrough Speaker, takes it one step further when he’s advising speakers: “Carve a niche, and then carve a niche within your niche. The best personal brands are very specific.” And Juan Felipe Campos, VP of tech and partner at Manos Accelerator, goes one step further to focus on communities that he targets with his large-scale clients. “Keep your message and content consistent to one niche topic to become memorable within a targeted community.” The narrower and more focused your brand is, the easier it is for people to remember who you are. And when it comes time to hire a speaker or a new employee, your narrowed-down brand will be what they remember.

2. Be genuine.

There’s an easy way to have an original personal brand—and that is to be genuine and authentic. Millennial influencer and head of marketing at Popular Demand, Monica Lin, says “People can see right through a disingenuous act.” The more obviously a brand is a copycat, the more the audience will call out the perpetrator for it. Monica’s personal brand experienced a huge amount of growth after she began engaging with her audience more meaningfully on Twitter.

“Be genuine. It will make it much easier to manage your personal brand on a daily basis,” explained William Harris, Facebook ads expert at Elumynt. Your personal brand should be an easy daily filter that you create content and reach out to your audience with. And finally, Justin Wu, founder of CoinState says “Be a master of your craft, skillset or industry before starting a personal brand. Then your content will help amplify who you are.”  When initially building his personal brand, he garnered a reputation of being an expert in his field while simultaneously amplifying on social media that same renown. If you’re deeply skilled in one area, your reputation alone will help you build the brand you want.

3. Tell a story.

If your personal brand isn’t telling a story, you’ve already lost half of your potential audience. Allen Gannett, chief strategy officer at Skyword and author of The Creative Curve explains it best:” The most effective personal branding strategy these days is to build a true narrative – single character monologues are boring in Tinseltown, and even more boring for your personal brand.” No one wants to hear you shout about your brand into the social media void, so create a story around your brand that your audience can engage with. Allen regularly meets and chats with his audience in airports around the world, further developing his warm and friendly personal brand.

One of the best ways to tell that story is through written content or video. For Pelpina Trip, social video strategist, this is definitely the case. Her own video channel on LinkedIn sees some of the highest levels of engagement across the platform. “The most personal way to communicate online is with video. Simply use your smartphone to video message your clients, make a personal connection with prospective clients and connect with co-workers. After all, you always have your smartphone on you!”

4. Be consistent.

Being consistent is very similar to having a narrow focus—it’s much easier to get recognized for one topic if you consistently create content and brand voice around it. “Ensure that your personal brand promise stays consistent, both online and offline,” explains Fyiona Yong, director and millennial leadership coach (ICF ACC). She regularly works with millennials in a corporate context to help them define their more conservative work goals. “You have to demonstrate consistency across your communication, gravitas, and appearance. Don’t underestimate how tiny inconsistencies can derail personal brand effectiveness.”

On the opposite, creative side, CyreneQ, a top storyteller on Snapchat, suggests “something consistent either visually or personality wise. Something unique that people can associate with your brand and know it’s you. For example, a sidekick mascot or having a catchphrase you say after every video – something people can fall in love with.” Her sidekick mascot, Ele, has garnered millions of views per Snap for brand work, allowing her fun personal brand to represent big box brands like Walmart and DC.  So whether you’re creating a wild, incredibly out-there fun brand or one that’s a bit more on the conservative, corporate side, consistency is key.

Accelerator programme championing diversity in entrepreneurship in Wales announces winners – Welsh Business News

Accelerator programme designed to champion diversity in entrepreneurship in Wales announces inaugural award winners
10 May 2021 NEWS Business Matters

An accelerator programme designed to champion diversity across the Welsh business start-up landscape has announced the winners of its inaugural awards.
The Excelerator Programme has seen 23 entrepreneurs that are young, female, disabled or from a black and minority ethnic background participate in a Welsh Government-funded 12-week immersive accelerator programme.

The programme was launched to support groups that have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19, to help budding entrepreneurs launch and grow their business idea or scale an existing business.

The Excelerator Programme has included expert masterclasses for founders and mentorship and professional coaching from business start-up and scaleup experts. It has been delivered as part of the Business Wales Accelerated Growth Programme, which is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government. The programme has supported 1053 businesses in Wales to create over 9000 jobs. Research led by Professor Max Mundy of Cardiff Business School has demonstrated that £17 is generated in the Welsh economy for every £1 spent on high growth business support.

The Excelerator Programme Awards took place on Friday 7th May to celebrate the achievements of the entrepreneurs taking part in the programme. An independent panel of business experts judged the awards, and the winners were as follows:

Lean Start-up Award

An award for the individual with the most innovative approach in implementing lean methodology to develop their business

Winner: Ed Willes, founder of FENTA, a peer-to-peer fashion rental market helping people save money and the planet.

Innovative Business Development Award

An award for the individual who has taken the most innovative approach to the development of their business.

Winner: Dr Youmna Mouhamad, founder of Myana Naturals, a detangling comb and lotion applicator specifically designed for natural afro hair.

An award for the individual who has overcome the biggest personal or business barriers.

Winner: Gurinder Randeva, founder of Glamdeva, an online platform to easily compare prices, book and pay for hair and makeup services anywhere in the UK.

Most Collaborative Participant Award

An award for the individual who has collaborated most effectively with fellow participants during the Excelerator Programme.

Winner: Sally Brooks, founder of Brooklands People Development Services, a development company helping people and employees to achieve their full potential.

Excelerator Programme Champion Award

An award for the individual who has shown the most commitment and positive mindset during the Excelerator Programme.

Winner: Amy Sinha, a classically trained singer and founder of Amy Sinha Ltd, a professional voice-over agency.

High Potential Business Award

An award for the individual with the highest potential business in relation to sales, job opportunities and export.

Winner: Martina Fabricci, founder of CRISPR, who has developed an accessible e-learning platform for scientific research targeted at students, scientists, academics and industry professionals.

Excelerator award

An award for the individual who has made the most progress on their business during the Excelerator Programme.

Winner: Catherine Williams, founder of O’Honni, a luxurious lingerie brand, measuring app and support community for breast cancer survivors who have undergone mastectomy or lumpectomy surgery.

Richard Morris, Programme Director for the Accelerated Growth Programme, said: “We have been blown away by the commitment our Excelerator Programme participants have shown over the last 12 weeks. We have packed an enormous amount into a short time and have been so impressed by the dedication and tenacity of our business founders.

“The achievements of our participants are even more remarkable when you consider we are still in a pandemic, and many have had to juggle caring responsibilities and work commitments while working hard on developing their business plans.

“Everybody taking part in the Excelerator Programme has made significant progress on their business, which made judging these awards a difficult task. We congratulate our deserving winners and look forward to watching them develop their exciting businesses over the coming months and years.”

Cat Williams, the winner of the Excelerator Award, said: “It’s such an honour to be selected for this award and to be recognised for the progress I have made in the last 12 weeks, alongside all my fellow participants who have all worked incredibly hard on their businesses.

“My business was born because I am passionate about delivering a positive and empowering experience for women dealing with a life changing breast cancer diagnosis. The Excelerator Programme has helped me so much in developing my business strategy and has given me the tools and confidence I need to take my business to the next level. I now feel ready to get my brand out there, and can’t wait for the next stage of my business journey.”

Are you working towards the 17 UN Sustainability GOALS in your business?| Sustainable Development!

History

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

The SDGs build on decades of work by countries and the UN, including the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs

In June 1992, at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, more than 178 countries adopted Agenda 21, a comprehensive plan of action to build a global partnership for sustainable development to improve human lives and protect the environment.
Member States unanimously adopted the Millennium Declaration at the Millennium Summit in September 2000 at UN Headquarters in New York. The Summit led to the elaboration of eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to reduce extreme poverty by 2015.
The Johannesburg Declaration on Sustainable Development and the Plan of Implementation, adopted at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in South Africa in 2002, reaffirmed the global community’s commitments to poverty eradication and the environment, and built on Agenda 21 and the Millennium Declaration by including more emphasis on multilateral partnerships.
At the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 2012, Member States adopted the outcome document “The Future We Want” in which they decided, inter alia, to launch a process to develop a set of SDGs to build upon the MDGs and to establish the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. The Rio +20 outcome also contained other measures for implementing sustainable development, including mandates for future programmes of work in development financing, small island developing states and more.
In 2013, the General Assembly set up a 30-member Open Working Group to develop a proposal on the SDGs.
In January 2015, the General Assembly began the negotiation process on the post-2015 development agenda. The process culminated in the subsequent adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with 17 SDGs at its core, at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015.
2015 was a landmark year for multilateralism and international policy shaping, with the adoption of several major agreements:
Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (March 2015)
Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development (July 2015)
Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with its 17 SDGs was adopted at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in New York in September 2015.
Paris Agreement on Climate Change (December 2015)
Now, the annual High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development serves as the central UN platform for the follow-up and review of the SDGs.
Today, the Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG) in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) provides substantive support and capacity-building for the SDGs and their related thematic issues, including water, energy, climate, oceans, urbanization, transport, science and technology, the Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR), partnerships and Small Island Developing States. DSDG plays a key role in the evaluation of UN systemwide implementation of the 2030 Agenda and on advocacy and outreach activities relating to the SDGs. In order to make the 2030 Agenda a reality, broad ownership of the SDGs must translate into a strong commitment by all stakeholders to implement the global goals. DSDG aims to help facilitate this engagement.
