Born in Cardiff, David began his professional footballing career in 2004 at Bristol City before moving on to sign for Premier League football team, Wigan Athletic. He is a full Welsh international, making his debut against Azerbaijan in October 2005. David went on to play a number of English clubs including Sheffield United, Swansea City, Birmingham City and Bristol City before retiring from football in 2017.
After retiring, Cotterill revealed that throughout his career he had suffered with depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts and that he had battled with alcohol problems and went to rehab in order to battle the issues of alcoholism. Since leaving the game, David has worked hard to gain the help that he needed to be a good father and husband and truly wants to make a difference to the lives of others.
David has set up his own mental health foundation and is raising more awareness for addiction. David provides mental health talks all over the world to help inspire others to seek help and overcome the barriers they face. The aim of the foundation is to educate and inspire communities to speak up, support each other and take action.
David now works in partnership with the Football Association of Wales and Mind and is also looking to take on additional training this year to become a fully trained mental health therapist.
