Tumblr Bans Porn, Algorithm Weirdly Finds ‘Garfield’ And ‘Donkey Kong’ NSFW

As it seems, humans aren’t the only ones with filthy minds that see something naughty in just about everything that comes their way. Bots might be worse—according to them, even Garfield is NSFW now.

On Monday, Tumblr announced that it was conducting a sitewide crackdown on sensitive visual content, a genre that’s currently rampant in the network. Starting 17 December, all adult material will be banned.

According to its new community guidelines, “Adult content primarily includes photos, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples, and any content—including photos, videos, GIFs and illustrations—that depicts sex acts.”

However, it appears that these “sex acts” include innocuous imagery of Donkey Kong, Super Mario, and, er, laughing fruit.

To prepare for the ban, Tumblr started alerting accounts if their posts have been flagged, but to the users’ surprise, the supposedly offensive content was anything but.

“Tumblr managed to flag everything but the single, solitary 2014 nipple on my entire blog,” tweeted game concept illustrator Alisa Bishop.

A couple of users were also confused that their posts depicting the Monday-hating ‘Garfield’ had been marked as sensitive content. Should cats be clothed now?

Strangely enough, some accounts reported that a number of posts containing actual human nudity were considered safe.

Tumblr’s algorithm sure has some interesting tastes that need to be addressed.

Oh WOW I thought that shutting down my game project's Tumblr blog because of the NSFW policy was a protest action and not a practical one because all I posted was abstract art but NOPE Tumblr flagged a video of abstract blurs I posted https://t.co/tC4WSR7GB2 as adult content pic.twitter.com/WBwtx2nWwu

I just went through the 12 most recent pages of my Tumblr archive and these were the only three photos flagged. Two photos of me fully clothed and a picture of my vase ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ pic.twitter.com/dUG5K8lbCy
