An investment app’s bizarre advertisement depicting British prime minister Theresa May has been pulled following an outcry that she might have been hypersexualized.
The ad, produced by trading group Capital.com, portrayed May winking and pouting with visible cleavage underneath her blazer.
The ad copy read, “Her deal or yours? Make the markets your own on a historic day for Brexit.”
A screenshot of the caricature was first shared by Anastasia Zawierucha, a writer at Politicshome.com, who questioned, “Not quite sure who this ‘sexy Theresa May’ image is meant to appeal to?”
Comments from like-minded social media users have poured in, with one Twitter user, Leon Stephens, remarking, “Some human being did this, and another one signed off on it, and no others stopped them. Our species is doomed.”
“Imagine being the illustrator that drew this,” says graphic designer Ali Curie.
In light of the criticism, Capital.com has “withdrawn and terminated” the ad. A spokesperson of the app confirms with Metro, “We recognize that an advertisement posted on global media channels by Capital.com, featuring a caricature image of Theresa May, has upset some people.”
“It was not our intention to cause any offence and we apologize for any harm or insensitivity. We made a mistake.”
