Even in 2019, there are still disparities between how much women are being remunerated as compared to men from the same industries.

An analysis of 1.5 million auction transactions by Standard Chartered reveals that female artists earn 47.6-percent less than men at auctions. These statistics are backed by an art study conducted by the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School in December 2017.

Research findings also indicate that the gap is attributed to bias rather than quality of work—male creatives’ projects tend to fetch more even if they are produced using AI.

Between 3 and 6 April, Standard Chartered UAE held an exhibition titled Art Gap during the World Art Dubai fair at the Dubai World Trade Center. The showcase featured artworks from local female artists that were incomplete; specifically, 47.6-percent of the creations were left unpainted to match the prices of women’s auctioned pieces.

The project was a collaboration with advertising agency TBWA\RAAD, and coincided with International Women’s Day in March, when Standard Chartered UAE vowed to raise awareness about unequal pay.

It is also in line with the bank’s signing of the Fair Pay charter in 2017, when it advocated for men and women to receive the same wages, as well as keeps faith with UAE’s vision to be among the world’s top 25 nations for gender equality by 2021.

If women artists are going to be paid 47.6% less, they will paint 47.6% less. #ArtGap is an exhibition to raise awareness for gender pay inequality through the medium of art.
