Latest Coronavirus News from the BBC

Health Secretary Matt Hancock’s pledge to ensure 100,000 people a day are tested for coronavirus by the end of the month might have sounded significant but it has raised questions about how the government will meet the target. Labour says details are scant. Shadow health secretary Jonathan Ashworth wants to know how many of the 100,000 would be blood tests, and what role testing would play in the government’s lockdown “exit strategy”.

Academics warn testing is not a “magic bullet” and caution against creating a “false sense of security” with talk of “immunity certificates” when the science is unproven. Health correspondent Nick Triggle assesses the government’s performance against its pledges on testing, protective equipment for NHS staff and provision of ventilators for seriously ill patients.

Meanwhile, the battle to preserve the health of the economy continues, with the government revamping its emergency loans scheme to make it easier for struggling businesses to access funds and bailing out the bus industry to keep routes open.

For a second week, the nation honoured its key workers with applause on Thursday evening. One of them, Dr John Wright of Bradford Royal Infirmary, writes for us about the pressure NHS staff feel now they are dealing with multiple patient deaths.

In our latest explainers, we examine what it means – in practical terms – to be furloughed, and answer your questions about the outbreak, on subjects such as whether you can walk the dog or what policies exist on birthing partners.

Russia’s latest gesture in the coronavirus crisis came in the form of medical supplies arriving in New York – part of an operation dubbed “from Russia with love” by the Kremlin. In late March a similar cargo was flown to Italy – the worst-hit country in the crisis – along with 100 Russian military medics.

Russian media speak of widespread gratitude for this generosity, but how much of that is fact, how much fiction? US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted that the US had paid for the Russian supplies, and that “we have to work together to defeat #COVID19”. The Russian foreign ministry says the US paid for half of the supplies, and the other half was donated by Russia.

Coronavirus testing continues to dominate front pages. Every NHS worker forced to self-isolate has been promised a test by the end of April, notes the Times. Mr Hancock has staked the government’s reputation on the commitment to test 100,000 people per day by then, which is four times more than health chiefs previously said was possible, according to the Daily Telegraph. However, the Guardian warns the so-called “immunity passports” and antibody tests the government is relying on remain unproven. And the Sun pictures an empty testing site in Surrey, while reporting that swabs are being sent to Germany for analysis. Things have gone from “bad to wurst”, suggests its headline.

Positive Coronavirus News Roundup

#PositiveCoronavirusNews

Thom Gibbs & Harriet Barber

1 APRIL 2020 • 11:30 AM

The list of beloved cultural institutions this virus has seen off is appalling. Glastonbury, all West End productions, Fast and Furious 9, it’s enough to make you pick up a worthy book for the first time in a decade.

But there’s one hardy entity which is here to save us from pretending we understand Joyce. Give it up for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Eurovision should be a relic. It’s highly kitsch, frequently gauche and an example of the continent working together in a post-borders spirit of friendship. All things to have fallen severely out of fashion in recent years.

But the show must go on, albeit in an online audience-free format. After postponing the traditional competition two weeks ago its organisers have now announced that there will be a new show airing on the original date for the final, Saturday 16 May.

Europe Shine A Light, bringing to mind one of our nation’s finest moments in the competition…

…will bring together all 41 (forty one! I challenge you to name more than 35 European countries) songs that were entered.

They’ll be performed in remote locations, with no competitive element, and the whole thing is optimistically expected to last around two hours.

Let’s hope the traditional spirit of Eurovision remains. We want curious performance choices, mostly dreadful music but the odd legitimately excellent banger, like this year’s entry from Iceland:

Perhaps something we can do without this time is laggy video communication over long distances. There’s quite enough of that currently in our lives.

Elsewhere, people are heeding the sounds of creaking from their larders and beginning to realise there’s only so much you can stockpile, so rationing is coming to an end in several supermarkets

An app will tell you if you come into contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus. If that sounds like a dystopian future where government tracking of the populance is not only wielded, but actively welcomed by the people, well, welcome to April 2020.

Perhaps best of all, the current climate has dimmed the powers of one of the year’s most tedious days. It’s gone midday and I’m yet to see a laboured April Fools gag from a corporation.

Here’s Harriet with the rest of today’s good news.

• NHS Nightingale has officially opened at the Excel centre in East London. The 4,000-bed hospital, which was built with the assistance of the Army, will help reduce pressure on existing services amid the coronavirus pandemic.

• Social distancing is working. New research by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has estimated that before the lockdown was introduced in the UK one positive person would infect 2.6 other people – now they infect 0.62.

• The public and businesses have donated over £100,000 in just a few hours to a Donate-A-Ride scheme, which offers free trips to and from hospital to London’s frontline NHS workers.

• Japan’s Fujifilm has started clinical trials to test the effectiveness of its anti-flu drug Avigan in treating patients with coronavirus, after reports of promising results in China. Trials in China have suggested Avigan could play a role in shortening the recovery time for patients infected with coronavirus.

• A man with a 3D-printing hobby has created a production line for protective masks.  Sid Lovatt from North Yorkshire has been creating masks and visors after receiving requests from care homes, GP surgeries and his local hospital ward.

• Thailand is giving its public free mobile data for those in isolation to help people work from home and families stay connected.

• Boots UK is going to donate over 200,000 toiletries to vulnerable people and NHS workers to use between busy shifts. The donations will include hand cream, shower gel and toothpaste.

Gratitude – 10 Reasons to be Grateful for those who are currently Self Isolating – #PositiveCornovirusNews

For those who are self isolating and are depressed in down and need a pick me up, try practicing gratitude. Change your perspective on the situation and rather than looking at what you’ve lost from the current change of conditions in our external environment and think about what you have gained in your immediate, local to you external environment (the place where you are currently self isolating) and in your internal environment (“from your skin in” – a recent quote that I have learnt to describe the internal you).

If you can flip the perspective and look at the positive of any situation then you can vastly improve your mental health and increase your ability to handle external forces and situations.

Please find some of my reasons to be grateful in our current situation and other gratitudes that I think this current situation brings to most people who choose to see them and accept them!

No.1 I’m a live and kicking!

Any gratitude list needs this one as it’s the biggest reason to be grateful that you’ll ever have. It was a tiny miracle but somehow you were born and as your reading this your still alive and kicking so well done – keep up the good work. Life is full of Rich experiences so get stuck in and enjoy them!

No. 2. – Grateful For Being Locked In With Our Loved Ones

If you are locked in or self isolated then hopefully you are locked in and managing to spend more time, much more than usual , with the person or people that you love and trust most in the world and when can that be a bad thing?

If you are self isolating alone then you have access to lots of different ways of getting in touch, for Free with all of the special people in your life. See No 3..

No 3. Gratitude towards connected technology.

Getting in touch with friends and family nowadays for nothing (FREE) has never been easier so let’s be thankful for technology. Whether it’s Zoom (which seems all the rage at the moment) or old favourites like Messenger, WhatsApp or FaceTime and Skype or even old classics like the phone or texting (actually utilising your unlimited calls and texts) there is so many ways to get connected and what’s the excuse , look at all the extra time that you now have on your hands – see no 4.

4. Grateful for the obscene of a long commute to work via Rush Hour Traffic?

Having been self employed and mostly working from home for the past 8 years this is a big reason to be grateful for me. Who wants to be sat in traffic and losing 2 hours of their day that you’re never going to get back? See 7.

5. Grateful for the dress code.

I’m in charge of the dress code and can choose to wear what I like. Time to get out all the clothes that I don’t always get a chance to wear and design my own dress policy. plus I can wear loads of things that don’t need ironing and that another chore gone and some more gained time. See 7.

6. Grateful for flexibility!

Now that you are in charge of your own daily routine you can decide the rules. Get up at a time that suits you, work at a time that suits you, exercise at a time that suits you, lunch when you want and finish when you want. You are now the master of your own destiny and your setting the rules, so be flexible and adaptable to a way that suits you and your life and not to someone else’s way that you have been conditioned to confirm to.

7. Gratitude for the extra time.

Now that you’ve lost the daily commute and the ironing etc. you now have the time to exercise at home or do that extra hobby or interest that you could never really make time for. I often find it hard to make time to exercise but have been exercise regularly at home with the new found time saved and the hour given to me for daily exercise by Boris!

8. Personally I’m grateful for Online Zoom networking.

Having to turn up at real world networking something that I done regularly in the old world was time consuming and difficult to achieve too often so I used to go to an event 1 or 2 times a week but now there inline I have been doing 1 or 2 a day, and now I’m connecting with people from much further away than just South Wales.

9. Gratitude for values and appreciation!

I’m starting to realise what’s important in life and becoming a better human being and more appreciative of what we do have and that can’t be a bad thing. Hopefully these sorts of lessons will enrich human being and make them more appreciate of the important things in less and less focussed on the menial / shallow, unimportant, fake and self obsessive sh*t that sometime everyone gets obsessed with.

10. Plenty of time and free resources for learning and self improvement / self development.

There are no excuses, News the time to read a book, listen to an audio book or podcast or watch a load of you tube videos. Learn all the things you have ever wanted to know and all the skills you gave ever needed all at a touch of a button or in a book!

So in summary now is the time to take action and control of your life and your own destination. You (and I) have plefty of reasons to be grateful over the current situation so let take advantage our make it our time now!

Positive Coronavirus News as Virgin Orbit make. New bridge ventilator that can be mass produced #PositiveCoronavirusNews

Virgin Orbit has developed a new bridge ventilator that can be mass produced to help in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

The Virgin Orbit team has been consulting with the Bridge Ventilator Consortium (BVC), led by the University of California Irvine (UCI) and the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin). The group came together to design, develop and build simple ventilators to aid in the current COVID-19 crisis.

Pending clearance by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Virgin Orbit aims to start production at its Long Beach manufacturing facility in early April, sprinting to deliver units into the hands of first responders and healthcare professionals as soon as possible.

As the COVID-19 crisis worsens and the shortages of medical equipment has become more and more clear, the Virgin Orbit team has been motivated to try and help. On a normal day, the team is building rockets for space launch. While they are not medical doctors or manufacturers of medical devices, they do have a team of incredibly innovative and agile thinkers — experts in designing, fabricating, programming, testing — who are eager to lend a hand.

Virgin Orbit contacted Governor Gavin Newsom last week to see what they could do, and were directed by his office to the California Emergency Medical Services Authority (CEMSA) and put in contact with the BVC.

The BVC is a team of brilliant doctors, medical device experts, and researchers at UCI and UT Austin who are working around the clock, sharing ideas across a broad national and international network to share best practices and design insights and to accelerate progress on solutions to this equipment shortage.

Today, complex, high-end, ICU-capable ventilators are sometimes the only option available for moderate cases — for people who don’t necessarily need intensive care or have partially recovered. By supplying “bridge” ventilators, Virgin Orbit’s device can free up those critical resources for the most ill.

“We are all heartbroken each night as we turn on the news and see the predicament facing doctors and nurses as they heroically work to save lives,” said Virgin Orbit CEO Dan Hart. “I have never seen our team working harder. Never seen ideas moving quicker from design to prototype. We are hopeful that this device can help as we all prepare for the challenges ahead.”

Virgin Orbit engineers have taken rapid scaling into account from the beginning of the design process, taking advantage of the most common and robust manufacturing and assembly processes. The company’s aim is to have a functioning, deployable bridge ventilator in production in early April. Virgin Orbit would continue on to rapidly scale up to mass production in its Long Beach facility, in addition to potentially activating other manufacturers as soon as the new device is reproducible and production-ready.

“We face a slow-motion Dunkirk, and getting ventilators out there is very important to save lives,” said Dr Brian JF Wong, assistant chairman of otolaryngology at UCI. “The demand outstrips supply, so it is important the government, industry, academia, non-profits, and the community work together to identify solutions, and design and construct them as fast as possible.”

Positive Welsh Business News – #PositiveCoronavirusNews

The fund will support firms of all sizes, including social enterprises

First Minister Mark Drakeford has today announced a new £500m fund to provide extra support to the Welsh economy, businesses and charities experiencing a sharp drop in trading as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Economic Resilience Fund aims to plug the gaps in the support schemes already announced by the UK Government, including the Job Retention Scheme and the Self-Employed Income Support Scheme, which will guarantee 80% of people’s wages and income.

The new £500m Welsh fund will support firms of all sizes, including social enterprises, with a focus on those which have not already benefited from the coronavirus grants already announced by the Welsh Government.

First Minister Mark Drakeford said:

“The pace at which the coronavirus pandemic is affecting our economy is extraordinary. Now, more than ever, government needs to do all it can to support the economy and business.

“The recent announcements by the UK Government provided some much-needed protection for many workers and their families in Wales. Only the UK Government has the macro-economic and fiscal levers to minimise the enormous damage this economic shut-down will do to the UK economy.

“But even with these interventions, there are elements of the economy, businesses and charities in Wales facing insolvency because fixed and operating costs – rent, residual salary costs, leasing charges for vital equipment and maintaining operations – cannot be met during this crisis.

“We made a commitment as a Welsh Government to fill the gaps and support the economy and businesses through this incredibly difficult time.

“This package of support provides further assurance to firms, charities and social enterprises that we will do just that – help them deal with the economic impact of the pandemic.”

The £500m fund is made up of two main elements:

  • A new £100m Development Bank of Wales fund will be available for companies experiencing cash flow problems as a result of the pandemic and will provide loans of between £5,000 and £250,000 at favourable interest rates.
  • Businesses will also be able to benefit from a £400m emergency pot providing:
  1.  Grants of £10,000 for micro-businesses employing up to nine people. This includes sole traders employing staff. Qualifying businesses will be able to apply by mid-April.
  2.  Grants of up to £100,000 for small and medium sized firms with between 10 and 249 employees. Qualifying businesses will be able to apply from next week.
  3. Support for larger Welsh companies, which are of critical social or economic importance to Wales. This element will be open to qualifying businesses within the next two weeks.

The £500m Economic Resilience Fund will support businesses forced to temporarily cease trading – to go into “hibernation” – or which need cash-flow support to adapt to a remote way of working.

The new fund builds on the £1.4bn business support package announced by the Welsh Government on March 18, which provides a year-long rate relief holiday for all but the largest premises in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors and grant-support for more than 70,000 small businesses.

Ken Skates, Minister for the Economy, Transport and North Wales, said:

“This £500m package will provide further vital assistance to thousands of firms and third sector organisations, which normally rely on trading income.

“We have been very clear, we are here to support the economy and the business community. We stand with every business and worker. Together we will get through this exceptionally challenging period.”

Responding to the Welsh Government announcement on £500million Economic Resilience Fund, Ben Francis, FSB Wales Policy Chair, said:

“Many businesses will feel reassured by the grant funding announced by Welsh Government this afternoon. Welsh Government made a promise to go above and beyond the level of support offered in England, and they have.

“This increased grant funding will provide a safety net for those businesses who will not have benefitted from the initial round of grants, and demonstrates that Welsh Government has sought to fill those gaps. We were also pleased to see a particular focus on social enterprises, which until now had not been a large part of the conversation. This will help ensure that those businesses can make it through this disruptive time.

“The emphasis for the Economic Resilience Fund must now must be on delivery; ensuring that the detail of this fund is made available to those eligible for it, and making sure that the money gets out of the door as quickly as possible, so that it can start to have an impact on the ground.

“This is reassuring news for businesses, and for the Welsh economy. We must now turn our attention to how we can fill other gaps, including for those that are recently self-employed.

“Once we come out of the other side of this crisis, Wales will need our entrepreneurs to be innovating and stimulating our economy. Those businesses need us now, and we are encouraged to see that Welsh Government has introduced such a strong package today.”

Ian Price, CBI Wales Director, said:

“The economic resilience fund will be welcome news for Welsh enterprise. During this unprecedented time it’s vital support for businesses – large and small – gets to where it’s needed most, and fast. More may be needed as the situation develops.

“Meanwhile firms will continue to do their best by their employees, adapting quickly to new guidance and helping national efforts by supplying essential goods and services.

“Longer term, close cooperation and communication between business, unions, devolved and national governments will be essential to ensuring as many firms as possible can emerge from hibernation intact once the pandemic passes.”

Lloyd Powell, head of ACCA Wales, said:

‘We welcome the proposals announced today by the Welsh Government during what is a regional, national and global emergency.

‘The economic response from Government has been swift and very welcome at a time of huge uncertainty for micro, small and medium sized businesses and the millions of people they serve, employ and trade with.

‘With unprecedented economic stimuli being released to support the Welsh and the UK economy, it is encouraging the Welsh Government is attempting to demonstrate fiscal prudence by using cash reallocated from existing budgets and indeed new money from the UK Treasury.

‘We await further schemes being announced throughout the week, it is important government continues to be receptive to the needs of business and acts as a vital safety net throughout the Coronavirus pandemic – however long its duration.’

We are better prepared now for future Pandemics… This pandemic caught the world by surprise, with even the top leaders not expecting this unprecedented pandemic. However, we will learn from our mistakes, making the next one easier to navigate. Dr Shmerling: “The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed shortcomings in healthcare systems throughout the world that provide an opportunity to improve them. “For example, a faster global response, better and quicker distribution of testing kits, and more coordinated and coherent public messaging should be expected the next time around. The only new cases were ‘imported’ from travellers arriving there. “While actual numbers are hard to verify, and the methods these countries used to contain infection, such

Recruitment drive for NHS volunteers stopped now as levels reach 750,000…

The NHS drove for volunteers have reached their target just two days after it was extended, the Royal Voluntary Service announced today.

The recruitment drive has been such an overwhelming success that it has now been temporarily paused to allow the charity to process the torrent of applicants and work with the NHS to get the volunteer army up and running.

Those who registered will be helping the health service perform ‘vital roles’ that will allow people to comply with strict government advice on self isolation and social distancing.

Community response volunteers will collect and deliver shopping, medication or ‘other essential supplies’ for people under isolation.
